Employment Raise / Bonus Question

JawbreakerIt would be really interesting to know what line of work you are in. Just because some business sectors are hurting, it doesn't mean all of them are.

If you really wanted to make a point, crunch the numbers to see how much money you're "really" making compared to 10 years ago, and at the very least demand a cost-of-living adjustment.
Anyone who would "demand" a raise from me would be working his last day for me. -

Again, I was not complaining about my job per se (it wasn't that I went up to the boss and point blank demanded a pay raise or anything remotely like that), but the subject just happened to arise in a random conversation and one thing led to another and now I have been made to feel like crap/ungrateful simply because of the way the random conversation veered because I voiced my opinion on the subject.
The lesson to be taken from this is that something as important as compensation should not be part of a "random conversation". Better to set up a time to discuss it, and do so in a professional manner with all of your facts lined up to be presented. It's a business deal being discussed, do it as you would any other business deal. -

The "increases" are likely getting pulled from his paycheck. -

Perhaps "demand" was a strong word, but employers who don't give cost-of-living adjustments are essentially asking you to take a job and make less money over time. -

Possibly, sure but be conscious of the total cost paid. Some employers don't pass all of the increases on to employees each year. Be aware of what exactly it's costing for that medical coverage. Our employees mouths hit the floor when they find out. Suddenly they appreciate more what we are providing for them.dlazz;810045 wrote:The "increases" are likely getting pulled from his paycheck. -

We had a guy get fired for sexual harassment the week after his wife had a baby. (I wonder how he ever explained that to his wife!) Our benefits are actually pretty cheap here, but when he came in to get his COBRA packet he found out it cost $900 a month for family coverage. He went out and sat in his car for about four hours before he finally drove away. I'm not sure if he ever decided to get it or not. -
Con_AlmaThat had to be an interesting conversation between that guy and his wife!!
