Too close to home

I graduated from a small country school in northern Ohio. Today, we sadly were informed a fellow alumnus of that school was killed in action.

Losing any American serviceman is terrible, but it seems to have more of an impact when they are from your hometown.

    Rest in Peace Lieutenant Runkle.

    Didn't he go to Northwestern?

Thank you for your service, Lt. Runkle, and godspeed, sir.

I lost a friend of mine from High School to an IED back in 2005. We had lost touch after graduation. He was always a good kid but with a lot of home problems he got into drugs and ended up getting caught. The Judge told him "jail or military" so he chose the army. Died 2 years later in Iraq. It's tough to see the deaths from war, but it's even harder when it is someone you knew or someone that went to your school.

I would like to see a lot more of this.

Ringz, my folks were down to visit wifey and they were telling us about this. Sorry to hear about it.

I believe, but may be mistaken that this is the first casualty from Wayne County.

I think so. Although a good friend from Loudonville died in 2009 unfortunatly not the first from the area.

I remember the guy from Loudonville. Triway did a special tribute to him at halftime of a football game. It is very emotional.

    They would have an option.

Would you want to go to war with someone who didn't want to be there? Don't want to derail the thread but I think that is what Tiger is getting at. This topic should be discussed elsewhere.

Because I trust my life with the guys standing next to me on my left and right. I want people next to me who wanted to join. I wouldn't want some thug who broke the law and was given the 2 choices jail or military. Fuck that.

Lets please get back on topic.

You think none of those guys to your left or right have used drugs before? Come on now.

But they decided to join the military....they weren't standing in front of a judge. They joined the military on there own.

Nope, but 2 of my 3 brothers in the military have, and both of them had been to jail prior to joining. Oldest brother is currently an officer in the Marines and is doing quite well. Any other questions?

I feel the need to defend my friend here. He was caught with just above the amount of marijuana that constitutes intent to distribute or whatever. He was nowhere near a "thug". He had a strong military history in his family. His dad and all his uncles were retired military. That is why he was given the option. I would appreciate it if you would show respect to my dead friend and not refer to him as a "thug". His dad was one of the main people who got the Fallen Heroes memorial in Sunbury started. His death has also encouraged me as well as my family to provide support for the Ohio Fallen Heroes memorial
