Playground Games

Little DannySo I went to my 5th graders Field Day last week. Field Day started in the morning and ended right about lunch time. His teacher informed me I could have lunch with my son. My son was excited to have me there (I sat with him and his buddies at their table) and then they all asked me to join them afterwards for a game of "four square". My son was excited that I was staying and I must say I was honored by their request.
I actually played four square too when I was in the 5th grade (some 25+ years ago, ouch!). My rules were a little different than theres by the basic concept was the same. There were some other games we played (wall ball was a big one as well). What games did you play as a kid at recess? -
vball10setkickball & whiffle ball, to name a couple
-
Mister TwisterKickball, Smear the Queer, Dodgeball, Red Rover, Tetherball, Four Square (or Two Square) are some of the games I remember.
-
HereticDodgeball and various versions of Tag were my favs. Like the one sort where anyone "It" tagged also became "It" until it was basically everyone chasing after the last couple kids.
-
BR1986FBUsually baseball, kickball or football. I was usually the all-time QB because I had the best arm and wasn't much of a receiving threat.
-
FatHobbitDodgeball, kickball, red rover, steal the bacon, tag and hide & seek were my favorites.
-
killdeer

The question was, What games did you play when you were in grade school, not what you did last week at your job as a teacher.
Dodgeball, Kickball and Wiffle Ball were the top games back in grade school considering we didn't have a lot of playground equipment. -
Thrilla12tetherball, kickball, foursquare/twosquare, basketball, and football
-
tuskytuffguyMost of the games mentioned ya can't even play anymore, cuz little Johnny will either get hurt, or his feelings hurt. Thanks to soccer moms.

As I mentioned in the OP, we played wall ball. For those not familiar, the game is played with either a tennis ball or a raquetball. The object is to throw the ball against a wall. Someone else must either catch the ball on the fly or on a bounce. If you drop the ball, you must run to the wall. The others must grab the ball and try and hit that person before they tag the wall. If that person does not touch the wall before being hit, they must stand against the wall spread eagle for everyone to try and hit them. Even in the 80s this game was controversial with the teachers/admin. We absolutely loved it and played it as much as we can. -

One thing that I realized quickly watching my son and his sons play was that Four Square is serious business! They spent half their time debating whether the Cherry Bombs were legal, whether the ball hit the line or whether someone was read or not. Its good to see that in many ways boys are still boys.
