Centipedes in house....

  New home owner and its been over 10 years since I lived someplace that was ground level and never had any issues like that but now with a house it poses different living situations.. What is good pest control to use around the house? I have heard of some products you spray outside at the base of the house?

  I effin hate those things.
  
  About twice a year, when the temperature starts to change, we get a few spiders/centipedes in our house...We kill maybe a handful of each during this time, and the all are usually within a couple days of each other.
  
  I can't offer any real solutions since they still come to my house...I'd make sure there are no major game or anything that are visible in the outside of your house and under/around doors that lead into your house. I'll be interested if anybody else has any other good advice since I'd be ok with never seeing a centipede for the rest of my life.

  Millipedes are about an inch long and about the thickness of macaroni. They eat dead/rotting wood. A little sevin dust sprinkled very lightly around the basement baseboards or along the outside of the house foundation will get rid of them. Remove rotting wood.
  
  Not sure about centipedes which area couple of inches long...pretty big actually.

  In order to get rid of centipedes, you should start with reducing the moisture and humidity in the basement. The next step is to apply a good residual Pest Control spray like Bifen IT or Suspend SC and a good dust like Drione or an aerosol Pest Control such as Whitmire 565 Plus XLO for hard to reach places. For outdoor centipede control Bifen Lawn and Perimeter 2.0% Granules will provide effective Centipede control.

  Do you have a crawl space? If so-make sure you have no standing water down there. We had a problem with them and silverfish when we moved into this house. We have since put down a vapor barrier and have not had near as many.

  water in the basement for a bit now with all this rain..started back when that flooding started. Nothing major but enough to make it damp. probably is deriving from that.

  I have House Centipedes in my house, as well. They were almost non-existent in the winter months, but I've seen about 1 every week or two since the beginning of March. Last year I went around the exterior walls of my house and sprayed Sevin (http://www.gardentech.com/sevin.asp) at the base, and it seemed to help some.
  
  One thing I think is alarming about them is the following from the Wikipedia article, which a friend with the same insect problem also heard from an exterminator:
  "In a laboratory experiment of 24 house centipedes, an average of 63 and a maximum of 151 eggs were laid."
  Every 3 months or so, your house centipede population can multiply by 63. Every one you see, you MUST KILL! My friend's problem was much worse than mine, as he and his children would crunch hundreds under their feet while walking from their patio door to their outdoor pool, since they were all over the ground outside the house.

  My house is surrounded by landscaping rocks (normal-sized stones/rocks, not slabs) instead of mulch, and I guess that keeps the ground cooler and holds in moisture more than mulch, and that is why my house has been a place the little guys like to call "home".
  

  Outdoors, house centipedes prefer to live in cool, damp places. Centipede respiratory systems do not provide any mechanism for shutting the spiracles. That is why they need an environment that protects them from dehydration and excessive cold. Most live outside, primarily under large rocks, piles of wood and especially in compost piles. Within the home, these centipedes are found in almost any part of the house. Most commonly, they are encountered in basements, bathrooms and lavatories, which tend to be humid, but they can also be found in drier places like offices, bedrooms and dining rooms. The greatest likelihood of encountering them is in spring, when they come out because the weather gets warmer, and in autumn/fall, when the cooling weather forces them to find shelter in human habitats.

  ^ ugh, earwigs with their ass pinchers. Never had a problem with them in the house though.
  
  As for millipedes, we used to get a shit ton of them in our basement and garage at certain points during the year....it was so bad that right outside of our garage you'd have to walk on thousands of them. Dad would spray them with WD-40 resulting in mass genocide but it really wasn't a preventative measure. Our basement was extremely humid so reducing moisture would be step one. Laying down a good dust or spray like 4cards mentions should help phase out most inside issues.

  Centipedes are there because you have spiders ..... their favorite meal. Thus, the centipedes are probably doing you a favor.
