Computer nerds...quick question.
-
wes_mantoothI am posting from my phone cuz my lappy took a shit.
Anyhow, help me pick....
Dell 15r i5 -2140....$610
Or
Asus i5-460....$519
Other specs are similar....i am just hesitant to buy a dell...but it does have the sandy bridge -
karen lotzDon't know much about Asus, but Dell blows.
-
karen lotzI also don't know what the sandy bridge is.
-
se-alumI've had a refurb Dell now for 6 yrs w/ no problems. Hell, I even spilled an 32oz cup of water on the keyboard and stil no problem. Not sure why ppl are hesitant to buy Dell.

Yeah, I haven't had much luck with dell. Sandy bridge is the new intel processors. -
O-TrapHonestly, it's a wash, given that the other specs are similar. Hard drive space, RAM, processor cores (and speed) all being equal, I would then look at display. One have a bigger screen than another?
-
wes_mantoothNah, both are 15 in and 720p. I am just curious if the upgrade to the sandy bridge is worth about $100.
-
O-TrapI wouldn't think so, unless you have something intense you'll be using on the computer.

believerWe use Dell laptops at work and have for years. I'm tight with our IT guru and he thinks they're fine...except he says Dell's customer service sucks. lol

I have always heard that their business line is good. This is the inspiron line....which I have had an issue before. -
dlazzGet the Asus.
-
vball10sethave Dell desktop (6 years) and 2 laptops (1-1/2 years) with no problems at all

Was expecting "BUY A MAC THEY DON'T GET VIRUSES OR BREAK!"
But I agree. Get the Asus. -
bases_loadedStop being a cheap ass, buy a Mac...they don't get viruses or break

AutomatikI'd go with the Asus.

This. -
wes_mantoothI considered giving it a shot with a mac, but the money was just too high for what I wanted. I just dropped 2 grand on a vacation for me and my kid and another couple hundred on a piranha tank..so I am tapped out.

You made the right choice. -
I Wear PantsCan we get a spec rundown of these particular models? When searching I was getting the base models and such.
The bump to Sandy Bridge should yield at least a 10% increase clock for clock if I remember the review correctly. -
I Wear PantsIn this case I'd probably go with the Dell only because when purchasing computers I suggest people set up a firm budget (IE the max of the budget is what they're looking to spend not the maximum they could spend) and then try to get the absolute best hardware for that price. So if the better PC falls in your budget I'd say get it.
-
bo shemmy333799% of the so called brand names are shit IMO. The only thing that matters is what is inside the PC, not the name. The only thing I would say is to watch out with desktop Dells as the buy the cheapest Power Supplies out there which makes you upgrade if you ever want to add a video card.
-
I Wear PantsOh yeah, and when you get your PC I suggest you do a clean install of Windows. Most OEMS load it down with a bunch of shit that makes it perform like ass. And please, please, please don't pay for an anti-virus, even if Norton or whatever is included don't use it. Microsoft Security Essentials is honestly the only Windows antivirus worth bothering with right now.

OUdidntknowBetween the two I would go with the asus..I had a dell inspiron that was junk.. Bought it new, then motherboard went bad, it got so hot it burnt your lap. It was all fixed once for free after warranty due to a class action lawsuit, but not without a huge hassle. Now I have 2 Lenovo's and they are great, I would check their website first.
