Got an iPhone? See where it has been tracking you

I guess these guys say there's an app you can run to view the tracking data from your iPhone: http://petewarden.github.com/iPhoneTracker/. Apparently it's not opt-in either, it's not based on location services (i.e. your GPS doesn't have to be on for it to record your location).

An article from PC Magazine about it: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2383876,00.asp

Anyone that has any cell phone must know it can be tracked at anytime if they want it too. No surprise here, it can be done with any of them.

Can you easily access the location data on other devices though? Or is it all stored elsewhere? I don't actively seek to find my tracked info, so I don't know. It would seem the issue is that the iPhone is storing the data on the device itself - meaning if it went into the wrong hands a person would know a lot about you almost instantly.

Police investigations have pulled phone company records to find out what cell tower your phone is connecting with to place people at the scene of the crime when their alibi claims they were elsewhere.

Any electronic device that communicates to another must have some type of authentication protocol to verify it should be accessing the network. And the server making the connection has to log each attempt. Not surprising you can then look up those old records. They don't just 'wipe out' your phone minutes on your bill. They have to know, so they can a) contact your phone when you're called and b) bill you for the proper usage (data and voice, even if it's unlimited).

But the point is, the iPhone is storing it on the device. Is that the case with other smartphones?
