Dubai...not a fan

  • Manhattan Buckeye
It is like Las Vegas, without the Vegas. The world's tallest building is there, if I can get the link to work.

    Okay.

OK, it is hot, it is the desert, and there are a bunch of Arabs. I don't get why Dubai is considered so awesome. Its a giant stripmall, with a few big buildings.

I've been told the size, creativity, and design of the architecture is exactly why it's considered so great.

I could be wrong, but I have heard that some of the shine is coming off of Dubai
  • O-Trap
Yeah, I've heard they're REALLY in debt.
  • Automatik
There is a bit more there than just a few buildings. I've also heard that its not growing like they had hoped and lots of unfinished projects.

I have a few friends that work there.....I hope to visit one day.

I am pretty disappointed that they never got Hydropolis off the ground. That would have been SWEET!

I don't think they allow alcohol over there do they?

Drinking in public is prohibited, but you can drink in hotel bars/clubs.

If you've been living in a remote city in the more conservative parts of the Middle East, I suspect Dubai looks pretty dammed good.

    Or Detroit

Just watch the movie Unstoppable. You'll see enough of Bellaire to think Dubai is great!

Hmm, wonder what Dubai and the rest of the ME will be like once oil is no longer the dominant energy source? Hell, they'll probably be some of the huge players leading the charge into new alternative energies.

That's going to be a really really long time from now

Not convinced. My cousin is on the USA wrestling team and spends his time flying all over the world for tournaments and said Dubai was by far the best city he's ever been to.

Dubai will be nothing more that an example of Arab wealth gone wrong... The decline is happening now and slowly the financial base will be depleted. With the area surrounding Dubai in conflict and political turmoil this will create addition problem for the banking support to fund Dubai.

I can't wait to go to Dubai. From what I've been told the shopping is amazing and they have a lot of cool things to do. Will find out within the next 6 months.
