Salem/Columbiana area

I'm going to be interviewing for a job over in that area. Can anyone tell me a bit about the area? Rent prices? Colleges? Night Life? etc etc

Rent: Pretty cheap in Salem to my knowledge, may be a little more in Columbiana (they generally think they're something they aren't over there). Property values are pretty crappy in this area right now due to the economy, which works to your advantage.

Colleges: Salem has a KSU branch, it's just a little commuter campus but works well to get gen eds out of the way before KSU Main/YSU. Biggest full university to the area is YSU.

Nightlife: Little to none. Columbiana rolls up the sidewalks at dusk, Salem has a few bars but they bring out some interesting characters anymore, I go out here and there but generally avoid it. If you're middle aged and full of yourself, there are plenty of private clubs to choose from. Obviously, I am not a fan of those (namely because of my age), I'd rather go to the normal ones and put up with some of the other characters.

I was born and raised in Salem, and am still bumming around the parents' house while working as I finish up my graduate research from OU.

Rent should be pretty cheap in the Salem area. Night life isn't all that great. There's the bars in Salem and Alliance but nothing special.

The Rodgers flea market can get pretty wild. I was out in Alliance for 4 years at Mount Union. There used to be a great bar, The Bier Haus but its now something different and not as good. Salem has a few bar/restaurants that I went to (BB Rooners, Jalisco's) earlier in the evening that had pretty good food, cheap drinks but that's the extent of my knowledge of that area. If you're into golf there is Firestone Farms. Three of my best friends from college were from this area and I'd head down to play golf there quite often. It's pretty cheap for how nice it is.

Edit: Oh Camelot Lanes in Austintown had some cool college special on Monday's for bowling and drinks. Might sound shady cause its a bowling ally but it has a pretty nice bar from what I remember. I'd go out there and a lot of YSU students would be there. Just be careful cause there always seemed to be police patrolling the area.

FYI Camelot is in Boardman and that's why there is a ton of police around. Salem is a nice area, they have a nice CLEAN Walmart compared to the ones in Austintown and Boardman. They have a lot of family owned farms that offer some great produce and entertainment in the fall seasons.

SQ is from the area. That would be enough to keep me from moving there. He's the reason rent is so cheap.

The way things are right now, if you have a company willing to offer you a job you take the job and work out the details later.

Had the opportunity to visit BB Rooners this past Friday for lunch in the downtown megatropolis of Salem. It seemed to be a nice place. Definitely had a small-town atmosphere. A friend of mine tells me there are many jobs to be found in the area if you're looking.

The actual job i'd be taking would be a few town's over but i'd be looking to live in the Salem/Columbiana area. I actually have a good job now but this opportunity may be too much to pass up especially with all the SB 5 bullshit and my health insurance trippling.

    Rooners is pretty nice.

I keep telling everyone about Smokehouse Grille in Alliance though. Seriously the best food in the area. Dude is operating out of a small building next to his sign shop now but has plans to build a full scale restaurant/bar which should be sweet.

The guy could move into Wing Warehouse. We went by there over the weekend hoping to watch some NCAA but the damn place is closed!

That's because Wing Warehouse really is pretty mediocre. More of a Tailgaters guy myself.

But I think he actually has plans for a building and such already though I'm not sure. He showed us a CAD printout of what he wanted to do. But yeah the food is excellent.

Mikes Penn St grill is much much better than Rooners imo. Never ate at the Smokehouse Grill before so I cant compare.

I agree there. Nothing wrong with Rooners though. Just not all too special.

Smokehouse does bbq and steaks and such. Menu is small but everything is excellent. Macaroni and cheese is great.

The one in Alliance down by the Super 8 (pretty sure it's a Super 8).

    That's the one.

Rooners has Keno, so I prefer it to Penn Grill so I can gamble. Also, Penn Grill is ungodly small.
