Really Fifa?

Fifa is looking at disciplinary action against France's Thierry Henry as it was his handball that sent France through to the world cup. How can you suspend someone for a handball which happens in the game every time it is played? What kind of precedent are they trying to set? I personally believe it is up to the referees to get this right and if anyone is to blame it is them. This Goal wasn't in the run of play but rather a free kick which gave ample time for the referee's to get in good position.

Video at the heart of the controversy over the past week and a half.

    Any Thoughts?

Wow....this would be like suspending a guy for committing pass interference and it not being called.

Just put Ireland in as the last team, they're not gonna make it out of the first round anyways.

Nothing will come of it, they're just doing it to quell the suicide rate in Ireland.

    How can you watch soccer?

How awful is it that I don't even know/care who Thierry Henry is?
Does it make me a bad person?
    :(

He was the dude in the Gilette commercials with Federer and Tiger that no one knew. And about this, (I dunno if it is the same article) but the Italian league suspended someone for 2 games for hittin a goal in with his hand. Said it was unsportsmanlike. I still think it is stupid and the missed call was ridiculous.

Can't FIFA just suspend themselves for mismanagement and incompetence?
  • WeAreNC
I think FIFA should suspend ALL Soccer play indefinitely.

    Yeah, soccer needs instant replay.

It's a dumbass ruling. Punish the refs, but not the player. This isn't golf where things happen at the player's own pace and they have control over the ball (for the most part). The game is fast-paced and stuff like this happens. Henry (who I admit is my favorite non-U.S. player) was just playing the game.

    Idiotic.

And good to see this turned into a thread to bash soccer as a whole.

Just ignore them and they'll go away.

What I always find amusing is that CCrunner is one of the guys always on soccer threads to bash the sport... but yet he's a runner. That'd be like if I as a swimming fan constantly got on basketball threads and calling it a stupid sport.

Is it an inferiority complex because they occupy the same high school season and he just joins in on the ragging because football players do it?

It's like the wimpy little kid acting like a bully when his large friend already took care of another slightly less wimpy kid.

They wont do anything to Henry, if they do its a crime.

I LOVE that they try to punish players for diving though. I just wish they were more consistent with those rulings.
  • CharlieHog
Diving is a part of the sport.

Maybe I only feel this way because I love Cuauhtémoc Blanco though. haha

I don't know if people are all bashing soccer. I don't think saying soccer is not popular is the US is considered bashing the sport. I have seen the Crew play and watch them when on TV. And watched the USA in the World Cup but it is far from being amonst the majority of popular sports here.
  • Life's a Pitch
If you like Blanco then yes, you have to think it's all part of the sport!!

I think it's absolutely ridiculous to threaten punishment on Henry. He used his hand and nothing was called. The refs missed it and that's just the way it goes. I believe FIFA is just putting this out there to seem like it cares about Ireland's feelings regarding their loss. Oh well...bring on the draw!!
  • CharlieHog
Fifa is probably just pissed that Henry came out and said they should replay the match.

Don't mind him. He gets off on bashing people. The self proclaimed "BAMF" just does this because this is the only way he can talk shit and not have to face the consequences.

No its not. Running is just as stupid a sport. It actually much more stupid than soccer. You cant even effect the outcome of your opponents. How retarded is that?
  • Con_Alma
One of the purest forms of athletic expression is running. I have nothing against soccer but the beauty of running is you can compete in two ways...against yourself with time or against another with a first to a point approach.
  • gorocks99
Soccer involves a lot of running.
  • Con_Alma
    Indeed it does.
  • Fab1b
That is crazy to go back and punish the player for a foul the refs missed!

Nobody with a Journey avatar is a BAMF. Sorry to disappoint you.
