Anyone know anything about skateboards?

  My kid is wanting a skateboard for Christmas, but he is looking for a very thin one with gel wheels. I know absolutely nothing about skateboards, so what is a decent brand name and how do they rate these things in terms of thickness? Also, I am trying to stay around $100 or so.
  
  Note: I have found the gel wheels pretty cheap, but have no idea what trucks they need or if it matters.

  Grind King trucks are good and the king pins are gauranteed for like.

  I believe a thin board should be around 5-ply, but not for sure.
