How awkward will this be?

  • j_crazy
So, j_crazy, in all his professional prowess is getting an intern this summer. This is my first intern, so I'm already semi-nervous on how thing will work out (like did I give him a project that's too hard, or too easy, how will I perform as his direct supervisor, will he get killed when he does the work I've assigned him (yes, he's going to the rig to do a job the same as what I do when I go out), things like this). I get his resume today from HR because I'm supposed to give him a call and talk about his last internship and see if he needs anything (house hunting wise). While perusing his resume it occurs to me that he achieved a Bachelor's in Mathematics in 2002 and that he was a Math teacher for a high school in 2003 up until 2009 when he decided to go back to school and pursue a degree in Petroleum Engineering. This is where it gets awkward:

He taught HS Math in 2003.

j_crazy was taking HS Math in 2003.

Now I'm his supervisor for a summer internship. It just feels weird to me, on some levels. On others it's cool because HR is pissing down their legs worried that the underage interns will go out drinking with advisers (I did when I was an intern) but the cool thing is he's like 30 so if on our way back home after being offshore we decide to stop at the titty flop, it's a go.

I'm not making a big deal out of this, but I do feel like I'm worrying about nothing.

Was he your HS math teacher? I'm assuming so but the story doesn't make it clear.

I think anyone going down a very different career path, as is the case with this guy, would understand that they will very likely have bosses that are younger than him while they are starting off. I think as long as his being older than you doesn't impact your ability to be a supervisor I think you are OK.

Besides age is nothing but a number ...

No. He taught in Oklahoma. Obviously, I attended HS in Ohio.

For the record, if he was my HS teacher, I wouldn't ask because that would be awkward as fuck.

not awkward...at some point you're going to have a position with people under you that are older than you...that's just the nature of the beast

It would be weird if you were sexually attracted to him....You aren't are you?

There's a certain point in your life when you realize that you are now older than most of the cops. That hacks me off. ;-)

It'll be weird at first, but you'll get used to it. My secretary was in her 40s when I was born. She started working here when I was in elementary school. I guess I'm her boss now, and it seemed really strange at first, but after awhile, you completely forget about it. I wouldn't worry too much.

i was in charge of people who could have been my parents. aslong as your not a dick and respect the guy, shouldnt be akward at all.

I think you'll be ok. Just show respect to him and make sure its mutual and it'll all run smoothly

I agree, just bang him and get it over with.

Yep. I was supervisor for a department of people who were mostly in their 40's and 50's......at 26

    You get used to it
