After 47 years of service, Indian Creek School District's Superintendent will retire.
Jene Watkins has been in charge of the district since the 2000-2001 school year and his last day on the job will be June 30, 2010.
Watkins told NEWS9 he had high hopes for the next superintendent stating, that anything they need to be proactive.
"Don't sit here and expect good things to happen because good things aren't necessarily going to happen. It's also important to support your communities," said Watkins.
One of the biggest obstacles that person would be walking into is the district's budget.
As of the month May, Watkins said the books have been balanced. Just a few short months ago the district faced a $1.3 million shortfall and cuts seemed imminent.
But through some voluntary retirements, they no longer have to cut any positions. Still, Watkins said that whoever fills his shoes would have to continue to keep a watchful eye over the next couple of years.
During Wednesday's scheduled board meeting Watkins said they would be discussing a new hire. But, he said they've already started to think about who will be a good fit for the position.
Meantime, Watkins said he will be spending his time doing some substitute teaching.
