joe.hackettWhen you say knee pain, where exactly is it, like under the kneecap?
If it isn't a case of injury, in which you should be able to point back to a specific point, then it is probably some form of tendinitis. Rest and a anti-inflammatory should help.
If it comes back, look into some strengthening exercise to increase the muscle strength in the muscle you don't use while running. The running muscle get built up and put unusual strain on the knee. So, strengthen the other muscles and the knee pain usually goes away.
This has just been my experience with pains not associated with an injury. -

As far as accuracy, I'm not sure exactly how accurate they are, but they measure them in miles. The speed you have it set to will make a huge difference. The main reason I'm not sure about the accuracy is because I'm not sure how they measure the speed, I think it's in MPH, but never took the time to figure it out.Scarlet_Buckeye wrote:
I mean, take for instance yesterday... I was watching the Heat-Celtics game and watched about a solid 3 or 4 minutes of game action. I ran through this the entire time. Then came a commercial break where I kept running. Now... You have to figure commercial breaks are about a minute to two minutes. That takes me somewhere between 5 to six minutes. Now... I'm running at a nice pace here. Definitely not an all out sprint, but definitely not a jog. I would think that I would cover a complete mile at this point and the machine is reading about 0.5 or 0.4. This can't be right, right? lol
For comparison reason, after my workout today I jumped on the treadmill and put the speed at 7.1 and finished the mile in about 8 minutes 30 seconds.

Swamp FoxIf it's shin splints, there is a certain amount of pain involved. It usually comes down to how much discomfort onde can stand without bailing. It comes down to intestinal fortitude.

Most will measure in miles, but I'm sure there's an adjustable setting. If you're finishing in 12-16 minutes, here is what might be happening... The average person walks a 16-19 minute mile. If you're walking 0.5 miles, that's roughly 8 minutes. Then if you run anywhere between a 5-9 minute mile after that, that would put you around the 13-16 minute mark you're seeing.Scarlet_Buckeye wrote: I have a question myself...
I have used the treadmill in our apartment complex, and I always walk 0.5mi (what I think the distance is measured in) to get my juice flowing and then run 1.0mi. Now... I know I am not at the shape level as I was my senior year of high school where I was running 5:45min miles, but when I run on the treadmill now and what I believe the distance is measured in, miles, the associated time is saying I am running these in like 12-16 minutes.
Do treadmills measure distance in miles or kilometers? How accurate are they? I know there is no way I am running a mile in 12-16 minutes. -
thavoiceI find the treadmills to be tough. I know comparing it with my GPS watch.......seems likt is harder to keep a good pace on the TM than it is outside.

That is about right. It is an easy formula.Scarlet_Buckeye wrote: ...put the speed at 7.1 and finished the mile in about 8 minutes 30 seconds.
60 / pace(mph) = rate(time per minute) -
YtowngirlinflaIts just like pain in the knee cap when I step down and push off. Though like I said it hasn't happened yet today, but I notice it the most on stairs.

Do your shoes match your foot type and biomechanics? Start from there, if you buy an insole a day before you run, you may be making it worse. Ideally all shoes should even been broken in, but 15 minute won't kill you, but a rigid insole could, not to mention it could slow you down until your body adjusts to the new alignment most unforgiving insoles will give you. You could also see if a patella band could give you some relief. I wouldn't suggest making a habit of it until it is prescribed, but it may get you through the run, if it is bothering you, you can just throw it off.Ytowngirlinfla wrote: Its just like pain in the knee cap when I step down and push off. Also on insoles, rigid feet usually are not compatible with MOST "support" insoles. Will lead to IT Band issues, shin splints, impact injuries, etc. Also blister issues, as the insole doesn't want to give and neither does your foot. Many good brands depending on what you need. Powerstep, Superfeet, Sorbothane, Spenco, and Implus, but they need to be compatible with your feet and how you run. Who cares if they work with someone elses... -

Then what the PITman stated seems the most plausible unless you're resetting the timer after you walk your 0.5 miles. If that's the case then the treadmill may be screwing with you!Scarlet_Buckeye wrote:

This is outstanding advice. Captain obvious is right on!captain_obvious wrote: Do your shoes match your foot type and biomechanics? joe.hackettDo a Google search on "Runners Knee". The pain under the kneecap is patellofemoral pain syndrome. It happens when a mistraking kneecap irritates the femoral groove in which it rests on the thighbone. Usually happens to recreational runners especially when they start training harder and for longer that they are use to. It is most noticable on stairs or going downhill.
I developed this myself one year training for a marathon in which I missed many training runs due to weather one winter and it came back to haunt me with this pain.
You won't do much damage by continuing to run on it other than developing more pain and swollen knee area. After a run take ibuprofin and ice your knees.
To keep this from happening, every day do some simple lunges, squats and some other things I can't remember what they are called. Anyway, just your own weight at first and slowly increase using like 10 pounds. After about 10 days or CONSISTENTLY doing these strength exercise it will go away.
Just look up runners knee and you will get all the info you need, some really good sources out there. -
FlashOne extra strength tylenol and 2 Motrin 1-2 hrs before the run.

YtowngirlinflaWell here goes nothing. About to do my pfa in like 30 mins.
-
Con_AlmaGood luck. Put the knee issue out of your mind for 16 minutes.
-
YtowngirlinflaWell I passed ran it in 14:28. So glad it's over and I get to advance in a few weeks.
