Won't be flying Spirit Airlines....to start charging up to $45 for carry on bags!!

    For freaking carry ons that have to go in the overhead compartment!
    The charge will apply to bags in the overhead bin. Personal items that fit under the seat will still be free. Spirit said it will add measuring devices at the gates to determine which carry-ons are free and which ones will incur the charge.

    Me too, I never check luggage anymore, only take carryons. These charges are freaking insane!!

    On the one hand I'm not going to be happy with extra fees for an overhead (although I don't think we've ever flown Spirit), on the other hand it is annoying how so many flyers abuse the overhead compartments, particularly around the holidays when they pack in a bunch of gifts that of course are too fragile to be placed next to a roller-bag, so they stuff their coats around them as well.

    skybus had the worst business plan of all time. i did get a decent flight once though before they folded.

    I agree with that, but that is the airlines fault?? I have seen numorous times someone carry a shitload of luggage onto a plane, take up too much overhead space or it doesn't even fit. Why as they process them onto the plane, at the gate say to the customer um that is too much or too big you have to check it, no they let people get away with it for too long!

    I only fly Southwest.

    Carry on FREE and first 2 checked bags "under 50 lbs" FREE.

    Go ahead and tell us the horror stories.

    I watched them out the window of a plane load suitcases onto the belt and they were a bit rough with them.

    Tipping helps but it doesn't guarantee anything.

Look, we're not trying to hurt your bag, but when there's an hour turnaround and 200 bags forward and 100 aft to unload and reload, things are gonna get tossed. Things are gonna fall off carts. Things will get shoved into places to make them fit (that's what she said).

    The truly amazing thing is that your bag actually makes it to your destination at all. There are a lot of steps it has to go through, and if your bag misses one, or is being taken by a transfer driver down the ramp and your plane happens to be the last stop in a string of quick departures, chances are, it may not make it.

    I still think an automatic sorting sysþem could work pretty well, but denver messed it up so bad in the 90s that no one will be trying it any time soon.

    As for the checked bag charges, it is only suprising that the first airlines to charge for this wasn't U.S. Air.

    If that happens, call the airline/talk to an agent. They'll be able to track where your bag was last scanned (any bag going onto a flight is scanned right before it goes on board). Most likely it's floating around your original airport/transfer airport.

    Bags fly free on Southwest so ya should be able to send the damn thing anywhere ya want. :D

    it depends on the airline, i flew to spain on christmas eve and air france lost my luggage and it floated between, paris-madrid-and malaga for 5 days. air france delivered my luggage to the place i was staying and gave me a voucher for delta/air france for 1000 dollars (lost luggage and taking so long to get to me and international phone bill) and delta bumped me up to business class.
