It is too bad no one was able to give your parents this advice.sleeper wrote: People that have to file for bankruptcy are largely ignorant and obviously poor. My only advice for them is to start smoking/drinking heavily so you're time on Earth is cut short and also to abort the oncoming child ASAP so we(the public) don't have to feed it for their entire life. -

Based upon the comments that many of you have made, it is obvious that you have never gone through bankruptcy. Therefore, you don't know from first-hand knowledge what it is like. Nevertheless, people like you have made a lot of judgment calls on people like me.
If you ever had to go through this, you would change your tune.
You are right in that I have never been in your position...in any form what-so-ever. Help me understand better.
Was your bankruptcy filing entirely a result of you being a victim of circumstances?
Was there anything you could have done to prevent it?
Were there any decision that you made that contributed to your bankruptcy...that if made differently would have avoided your financial situation? -

Most of the comments when you started spouting off said there were certain cases where it may be OK. But like usual you just come crying about something. I'm not surprised you filed bankruptcy, because you love living off the government's teet.FairwoodKing wrote: Based upon the comments that many of you have made, it is obvious that you have never gone through bankruptcy. My parents are far from ignorant and far from poor. They make more money than probably everyone in this thread COMBINED and you can take that to the bank.karen lotz wrote:

Do not abort the child... An adopting couple that can't have children would cover the medical expenses and possibly give this child a wonderful home. Nashley25Good feedback everyone.
I can tell you this that my family member already sold his car bought a cheap beater truck, put his house on the market (no offers), cut the cable and internet. He met with a credit counselor and they refereed him to a bankruptcy lawyer. The lawyer told him to basically quit paying on credit cards and other accounts and to start saving his money in cash not in the bank. The lawyer also told him to wait to file bankruptcy until after the child is born so all the medical bills can be wiped out as well. -

I do have medical coverage. I have my own health insurance and I'm on Medicare. But even the two combined didn't pay for nearly everything. Over the past number of years, I have had seven surgeries and I'm on 18 prescription drugs. Some of these drugs cost me as much as $50 out of pocket.Fab1b wrote: So again may I ask why you didn't have medical coverage? -
Fab1bWell that helps then, thank you for answering that. Like I said there are circumstances where bankrupcy is the answer and I am not/wasn't slamming you. I just need to know the situation before I can give my true feelings on it and that to me sounds like it was a bit out of your hands then.

Actually, I'm sure it really, really sucks. I'm also 100% sure that a lot of people go through it solely due to poor decisions. Why would you have me have the same amount of empathy for them as for people whose circumstances were partially or substantially beyond their control?FairwoodKing wrote: Therefore, you don't know from first-hand knowledge what it is like. You shouldn't generalize. I filed. I am not proud. Sometimes there is nothing you can do when you lose your job. I lost mine, took a job making 14K less changed my life and I am again standing on two feet. I didn't do it for a cop out, I did it to survive and everyday is a struggle but at least I can pay my bills now. Best advice to give the couple is to always make your house payment. Always pay your mortgage and go from there.pinstriper wrote: Bankruptcy is a cop out...tell them to fight their way out of their debt, start making better decisions, and only agree to bankruptcy if they are FORCED into it by thier mortgage company or whatever. Most people that file are not even close to bankrupt, they just don't want to change their lfestyle and buckle-down to clear their debt.
Embarrassed I am not. I've worked hard my entire life and did not live above my means. Did I always make the best decisions probably not but I did the best I could and I am still doing the best I can. You can't sit around and feel sorry for yourself. Get a new job and pick up the pieces. Work for whatever anyone is willing to pay. I never turned down work. I just can't believe how cold some of you are but hey I guess I deserve it however I know in my heart sometimes it can not be helped. -
I Wear PantsYou bastards are all assholes. Acting like you're better than everyone that has money problems. I'm not saying that everyone that files for bankruptcy is a victim of the circumstances either. It's just that you're acting like people are lazy douchebags for having made mistakes with money. Which makes you assholes.

september63I agree. Every situation is different. I dont know everyones situations and id never judge. OhioChatter is a melting pot of many different backgrounds and opinions. I just got back from 5 days in South Carolina tonight and I dont feel like raining on anyones parade. Congrats Swimmer!!

And half of the ones preaching that they are 'holier than thou' are probably in debt or have filed in the past themselves. Nothing like putting on a façade to make themselves look better on teh internetz.I Wear Pants wrote: You bastards are all assholes. Acting like you're better than everyone that has money problems. Some (not all) people are lazy douchebags. If making this simple statement of fact makes me an asshole in your eyes, it's something I'll need to learn to live with.I Wear Pants wrote: You bastards are all assholes. WebFireWhile I agree with a lot of things being said here, there sure are some elitist attitudes on this forum.

Pick6If anybody has to file for bankruptcy, it is clear they have made financial irresponsible moves in their lifetime.

Or, it means something happened to you that you had absolutely no control of in your lifetime. I agree, most cases are due to the fact that they were financially irresponsible, but lets not be naive and ignorant and believe that that's true for every single case.Pick6 wrote: If anybody has to file for bankruptcy, it is clear they have made financial irresponsible moves in their lifetime. -

Most bankruptcies these days stem from health care costs. Perhaps there are some folks out there who could have bought a cheaper car and afforded something like Assurant Health to cover them and could have avoided a health care related bankruptcy...but very many normal, hard working Americans have gotten a catastrophic illness through no fault of their own and have had to file bankruptcy. I'm sure Many of them tried to tie up their bootstraps to stave off bankruptcy by paying for health care with their credit cards which may exacerbate the problem.Pick6 wrote: If anybody has to file for bankruptcy, it is clear they have made financial irresponsible moves in their lifetime.
A broad I bang is a mortgage banker and she checks credit every day and she's told me on more than one occasion how often she sees people strapped with debt for health related issues. Yet, they're trying to make things work...they're trying to get their home refinanced into a lower rate so they can cut costs, they're trying to pay down credit card debt...it's not so black and white
