space shuttle launch early today

Speedofsandnice launch just before sunrise, the last one scheduled to go up in the dark.
-
Big Red MonsterVery nice.

j_crazyhow far away can this be heard?
gotta imagine it would suck living within earshot of that SOB going off at 6 am. -
SpeedofsandI'd guess 30 miles, but its not very loud and is only for a minute. Back in the Apollo days, the ground shook and windows rattled a lot more but it has all became lighter and more efficient fuel made it not as spectacular. The rumble is unlike any other sound. Those pics are from 10-12 miles away.

ohiotiger33I saw a night launch from over 300 miles away last year. It was gorgeous.
-
BigAppleBuckeyeI watched a launch once from 12 miles away, it's sweet because you see the launch, and because sound travels slower than light, the sound catches up to you moments later ... very cool to experience.
