Cheating or not cheating

sportchamppsOk we had a team in our league lose their final regular season game on purpose. They lost because it gave them the number 8 seed in the playoffs instead of the number 6 seed. They said they wanted to play the number 1 team because it was an easier matchup then the number 3 seed. Next week the number 8 seed actually scores the most points in the league and beats the number 1 seed. Number 1 seed is now mad because they lost to the number 8 seed who could have been the 6 seed.
Im the commish, and I allowed him to tank the final game.
A few other factors for thought. The number 8 seed lost by playing without 2 spots in the final game. Last year regular season the number 1 seed played without a idp and lost because he didn't want to cut someone due to bye weeks. He lost the game by less then 5 points meaning he would have won with an idp player. It was middle of the regular season but the team who got the win actually moved up 2 spots in the playoff seedings because of that one win when he decided not to play an idp. So basically both people didn't start a full lineup, lost, because of it and altered the playoff seedings because it helped their team.
also the one seed would have lost to the number 7 seed who would have been 8 so it didn't really affect him anyways.
He didn't start complaining until after he lost. -

Unless it's in your rules that you have to start a full line up or you forfeit then you shouldn't change the situation.sportchampps;1552796 wrote:Ok we had a team in our league lose their final regular season game on purpose. I agree that you can't change anything if it's not in your rules. He could have just as easily played a bunch of bums knowing they would blow and lost. However, lame on the 8th seed's part. See below.sportchampps;1552796 wrote:Ok we had a team in our league lose their final regular season game on purpose. sportchamppsExactly my point. I just think it's funny the guy complaining basically threw a game last year not starting an idp to keep someone on his roster but if someone else throws a game it's cheating. Both of their moves were not playing a complete roster. Both moves affected playoff seeding. Both moves were done with strategy in mind. He thinks his is completely fine and the other persons is the biggest atrocity to happen to fantasy football ever.
The he best part is though is it's been literally a week and a half and he still arguing on the message boards with people. His last post just says whatever I quit just pay me for my regular season win. The funny thing is in our league we play the playoffs thru the message board and make the regular season go all 17 weeks before crowning a regular season champ. BTW he will lose this week and give up 1st place. -
like_thatIn my leagues, shit like that is considered cheating. Kicked a couple guys out due to bs like this.

How do you do playoffs through the message board when there's no games left? That seems like an odd way of doing things. Have you seen any benefit to this method that could enhance all of our fantasy experiences?sportchampps;1552830 wrote:Exactly my point. Dr. KnOiTaLLCheating is defined within the confines of established rules. If it was not established in the rules that this is not acceptable behavior, then it is not cheating. However, as a result of this scenario, it may be worth revisiting the rules in the off-season to address this issue.

Gblocki see no problem with it..rarely do i see it work but if thats the way you want to manage your team its not cheating to me
-
Gblockwhat rule can you make to stop it?? most guys could just play a crappy team if you really wanted to lose
-
ernest_t_bassIt's strategy. It's like Saban QQ'ing about Oregon's up-tempo offense last year, b/c it didn't benefit his players, or his style. This was a strategy move, not a cheating move.
-
Laley23That's bullshit. You play to win, every week. Even if you are in the playoffs, you not trying can easily fuck with other teams and seeding etc. that is a horseshit move and he is out of my league next season.
-
Gblockif you re losing to play the number 1 seed then how is it bs? if he is losing to play the best team, how is that bs??
-
justincredibleI see no problem with it, especially if it's not spelled out in the rules.

If losing makes my playoff run easier, then I'll lose.
However, not starting players is BS. -
sportchamppsJust to further clarify. The guy had the players in his lineup. They were in the Monday night game. Since the Sunday games were complete he knew who he would play if he won and he knew if he lost he would play 1 of 2 teams depending on the Monday night game. He said he looked at each teams matchups and decided taking out the number 1 seed would be easier then the number 3 seed making it easier for him to advance. He then pulled Lynch and Golden Tate before the Monday night game started because he was only losing by 3 points.
the guy is now accusing another owner of tanking his last game as well because he started Flynn over RG3 in week 13. I told the guy he is idiot as this point and I don't need him in the league if he's gonna whine about everything. I said for one Flynn out scored RG3 the very next week and in your playoff matchup you started oaklands d (-1) over the KC defense (26). I told him people can mange their own teams and make their own decisions as long as they are not roster dumping or making uneven trades which will just be vetoed.
we play our regular season out as all 17 weeks and pay the 17 week winner 25% of the total payout. Playoff seeds are determined after week 13. I as commish type the playoff matchups on the message boards for week 14 15 16. So basically if your in the playoffs you could and are most likely playing 2 matchups that week. We did this to keep more teams involed after the first week of the playoffs. This year for example the number 1 and 2 teams lost in the playoffs but are still battling the rest of the season for 1st place in the 17 week regular season. It also makes the waiver wire harder to navigate in the playoffs because instead of only 4 teams caring we have the four playoff teams and 3 more teams who were elimated who can still get 1st in the regular season. It also balances out the schedules more so you play more then half the league twice instead of only less then 1/4 of the league twice. -
sportchamppsOur league message board has been awesome today btw. 2 people complaing (both playoff losers who say they won't play next year) 3 people saying the guy basically did the same thing last season so STFU. Me being cordial as possible until he accused a second manager of cheating. The last place team admiting they didn't even know it was the playoffs until all the bitching started and that this war was worth his entry fee alone for the lols. Another owner saying he didn't know he was in a league with a bunch of vaginas. Then the guy who started the whole thing finally types this response to all the complaining.
Quick someone get Cory a phone he needs to call whine-1-1 and have the whambulance come pick him up because the whaaaaaburger he received is making his butthole hurt ( and while not a OC member finishes it with a ) GFY
i might have to invite everyone over to with the games Sunday so I can watch this play out in person now. Unbeliveably enough everyone in this league is between 25-45 with professional day jobs. -
ohiobucks1How many teams are in this league?
-
Me?LOL is this even a question? Of course it's not cheating. In no way can losing be considered cheating. If anything I'd throw the #1 seed out of the league for being a hypocritical *****.

So if you are the 7th seed because this guy lost on purpose allowing the guy who beat him to be the 6th seed instead of you...you dont think that is 100% wrong.Me?;1553149 wrote:LOL is this even a question? There is a reason most fantasy leagues have a rule that say you have to field the most competitive team as possible every week. We write it in every year because of bullshit moves like this. It doesnt affect him, and its not technically "cheating". But its wrong and destroys the integrity of your league. If I paid 500$+ and missed the playoffs cause someone lost on purpose, Id be livid as fuck and would not be back. As commish, I would kick the person out of the league.
But again, we have it in our rules that you have to field the most competitive team you are able to. -
Azubuike24Just my two cents.
You should have to fill each spot with an active player. That means a guy who has a game. If he's a late scratch, or doesn't score anything, fine.
You should be allowed to manage the match-up however you want, with the confines of the above rule. So, if you choose to play a "lesser" team, that's a subjective thing and can't be really fairly determined.
The biggest mistake this guy made was making it known he's tanking. STFU, manage your team and if someone has a problem, explain your strategy. To announce that "hey I wanted to tank so I'm benching guys" or "I'd rather play this guy than that guy" is just going to cause problems.
We've always had the option to remove people from a given league, but honestly, it shouldn't be an issue as long as there are rules and they are followed. If there aren't specific rules, you can't penalize someone in that season. Gotta change them next year and if people quit over it, oh well. -
sportchamppsIf you have to start the maximum team each week this why not just have each person draft a team and whoever yahoo says has the highest projected points must start for each team each week. That way you can take any decisions out of the owner hands and put them in whoever decides who is the best possible team for that week. There's no way to enforce that rule.
Who am I as commish to tell someone you know what you can't start Matt Flynn this week because everyone things RG3 will do better. What do I do as commish then when Flynn out scores RG3 tell the guy sorry I know you wanted to start him but the smart money was on rg3 so you couldn't.
It's a 12 team league. -
sportchamppsIs it wrong for an NBA team to tank to get a better draft pick? Does the NFL force teams to play their starting QB the last week of the season. The answer is no. The choice is up to the owner and coach of the team. In my league I will leave lineup decisions up to the owner of the team. Do I feel bad for the teams that lost. No they should have scored more points that week.

With statements like this, you're answering your own questions.sportchampps;1553163 wrote: In my league I will leave lineup decisions up to the owner of the team
Next year, make sure the rules are laid out and there are no problems. Part of being a good "fantasy owner" is using all of the rules and settings to your advantage. It's all part of the strategy. -
Laley23
Comparing fantasy to actual is ridiculous. Everyone gets paid in the real NFL even if they dont make the playoffs. What if someone had tanked a game early in the year cause they wanted a better waiver spot to grab a hot name and the guy he lost to kept you out of the playoffs because they ended up with 1 more win...? Its bullshit. Sorry. You gotta have rules that say you have to try and win...people pay money and they shouldnt get fucked over because someone else doesnt try to win a certain week. It would be different if everyone was paid for playing and got bonuses for winning, like in real life. But its not.sportchampps;1553163 wrote:Is it wrong for an NBA team to tank to get a better draft pick? Does the NFL force teams to play their starting QB the last week of the season. As far as fielding the most competitive team possible...we basically just say they have to be active, have a game and you cant just bench all your regulars. Having a hunch or taking a chance on a match-up is fine. Benching Peyton, Calvin, Lynch and Gronk for 4 guys you have on your bench or picked up that week gets you in trouble.
