Question about Keeper Settings

  • SportsAndLady
So my league is in its 4th season, and we have recently transitioned to a keeper league. Owner's can select 1 player from this year's team to keep next year.

An owner just texted me asking if he trades his 1st round pick, will he lose his keeper? I didn't have an answer for him, becuase the keeper settings isn't viewable in commish tools.

I did some research and found this:
    • Commissioners have complete discretion in placing keeper players in whichever spot in the draft order they wish to accommodate offline keeper rules. By doing this, they should take into account draft pick trades (for certain rounds) that were made the previous season.
      • Example: Your league rules call for keepers to be placed in the first two rounds of the draft. You will need to advise league managers not to trade picks in Rounds 1 or 2. If someone traded one of these rounds and no longer has these picks, you will not be able to place a keeper there. You will need to decide whether to place their keeper in a later round or give their keeper pick to the team they traded to.
    • If you select to place keepers automatically in the opening rounds of your draft, keepers will be placed in the first X number of picks available to each team.
      • Example: Your league has three keepers. Team A traded its first-round pick to Team B. If you choose to place keepers automatically in the "opening rounds", Team A will have keepers placed in Rounds 2, 3 and 4, while Team B will have keepers placed in both first-round slots and in Round 2.
I don't really understand that...can someone explain to me how that works, becuase this is all new to me and I don't want one of my owners to accidently trade away his keeper draft pick.

Our league does keepers like this:

You get 1 keeper per year. Whoever you keep, you lose the spot you drafted him in the previous year. Players can only get kept 1 year before going back into the pool.

For example, the guy who drafted Cam Newton with the 15th round pick kept Newton this year and lost his 15th round pick. The guy who kept Brady lost his 1st round pick. If you keep a player who was picked up off of waivers, you lose your 11th round pick. So if you trade your 1st round pick for a player, you can't keep your 1st round pick because you don't have a pick to use it on. But you would still be able to keep somebody else in another round.

Not sure if this helps you. Probably not. Just how we do it.

Our league does keepers as follows:

You get to keep any 3 players you want -- you have to keep 3.

I've had Ray Rice + Lesean McCoy since like 2009 and keep them every year.

Next year I will keep Rice, McCoy, and Matt Ryan/Roddy White.

We trade draft picks a lot --- my 1st round pick for 2013 is essentially similar to a 4th round pick in a normal league because there will already be 36 players off the board.

So, we treat draft picks entirely separate of keepers, they have nothing to do with each other.

On a side note, I have the following 2013 draft picks as of now - I should be stacked.

    Round 1
    Round 2
    Round 2
    Round 3
    Round 3
    Round 4
    Round 4
    Round 5
    etc.
