Your QB Strategy
-
gorocks99If you don't get one of the big 3 (Rodgers/Brees/Brady) do you wait to draft your QB until the middle rounds? Do you skip drafting one of the big 3 QBs in the first round even if they're available at your pick? I feel like with the depth at the QB position and the ability to get a guy who will score very good points in the middle rounds, it may be worth it to wait (for example, picking up Stafford or Vick or one of the Mannings in the 3rd/4th round if available).
I say this of course after I drafted Rodgers 6th overall last year in a 14-team draft and he led me to the best record, but still. Love to hear your opinions on drafting QBs. -
Raw Dawgin' itIf one of those 3 is available in the 1st round I'd take them - otherwise I wait and load up on RB and WRs. The past few drafts i've taken a QB bt the 6th and 8th round. Last year i got Romo in the 8th.
I'd stay clear of Peyton. -
mucalum49Last year I picked second to last in round 1 and nabbed Rodgers. He basically carried my team plus the talk of the NFL transitioning to pass happy I think those 3 are early-mid first guys. If I pick there I'd definitely take one of them. If not I'll take BPA at RB. I'm really intrigued by Cam. I think he can be had in round 2 or 3 after the Mannings/Vick/Stafford are taken. If he can cut INT's his dual threat ability could be a game changer. Couple that with one of the top 1st round RB's (McCoy, Foster, AP, Lynch) and you'd have something special.
-
Classyposter58A great RB core can make a dominant team but IMO if you can get like Foster or Rice and then maybe Stafford or Brees then you're set
-
dazedconfusedim always more focused on depth at rb/wr than i am at nabbing a qb. i usually end up waiting until about the fifth or sixth round before i grab a qb.
-
lhslep134I normally always wait. However, 2 years ago I won the championship with Rodgers. Last year I waited, got Stafford, but I won the championship because my last pick was Cam and I flipped Stafford/Pettigrew for Rivers/Jimmy Graham.
Even though I won using both strategies, I would say my life was definitely less stressful knowing I could rely on Rodgers for at least 20 points.
That being said, I think you have to get a feel for where you'll be picking again, whose been drafted already, and how your league drafts. If you take Rodgers and you start the run on QBs, you may end up with a great back with your next pick. If you take Rodgers and the rest of the league keeps drafting RBs and WRs you'll probably be outta luck. -
like_thatLast year I had first pick, and the group of guys I play with overvalue RBs imo. So, the first pick I take AP, and then the second pick (meaning 18 picks later) I had Brees. LOLFAIL on them.
-
like_thatAnyway, if I am not getting those 3 (most likely will all go in the first round), then I will get the BPA in the first round, and def get a QB when the 2nd round pick swings to me. QBs have been much more important in fantasy football the past few years.
-
Laley23Gotta get a QB by end of RD 2. Preferrably, you dont have to reach. But if those 3 go really early, you could see 4-5 in the first round, meaning your second round pick is probably gonna be a reach. But QBs have gotten so valuable, its tough to just wait on one till round 4-5.

I think both sides have a legit argument. You could say QBs are so valuable you need someone early, or you could say because it's a passing league, you can wait longer to get a QB who won't put up significantly less stats (as evidenced by the amount of 4500+ yard passers last year) as opposed to years past when if you didn't get a top 10 QB you were absolutely f*cked. That's not the case anymore IMO.Laley23;1242731 wrote:But QBs have gotten so valuable, its tough to just wait on one till round 4-5. -
hasbeenI'm in a new auction league and 8/10 of the top players were QBs. So i plan on spending high on QBs when I normally focus elsewhere. it's a non-ppr league.
-
trackandccrunnerThose top QBs tend to go fast in my league but after that people will normally wait. I have the 7th pick and if any of those 3 aren't available Im going to grab Calvin Johnson and hope to get Stafford in the 2nd round.
Although Im thinking of waiting and grabing someone like Romo, Rivers, Ryan until later. I mean after Rodgers, Brady, Brees, Stafford, Newton, E Manning, Vick get taken people are going to wait so you can take someone else in rounds 4-7 -
slingshot4everI'm liking Matt Ryan in the middle rounds this year.
-
bigdaddy2003I picked up Stafford and Cutler in my first draft.
-
SportsAndLadyI'm torn on who to took with the 2nd pick.
This will be the first draft where we will keep 1 player a year. PPR league.
I have to think the guy at #1 will take Rodgers, so should I take McCoy or Brees, hmmmm -

Keeper = McCoy. YoungerSportsAndLady;1246947 wrote:I'm torn on who to took with the 2nd pick.

Yeah, I'm starting to think that too.hasbeen;1247193 wrote:Keeper = McCoy. Younger
Would I be crazy to think Stafford or Calvin Johnson? -

On Stafford, maybe. Megatron, no. What positions score the most in your league?SportsAndLady;1247288 wrote:Yeah, I'm starting to think that too.

RotinajIf I can get McCoy rice or foster im gonna take one of them. I was 6th for my draft this year so I ended up taking brees. The last 2 years I've waited until like the 5th and got romo both times. I would of liked to do that but I just couldn't take any of the players available over Brees.

Don't have the stats in front of me but probably QB. It is a ppr league but just .5 per reception.hasbeen;1247317 wrote:On Stafford, maybe. Megatron, no. What positions score the most in your league?
Im probably gonna go McCoy. I talked to the guy with the first pick last night and I think he may actually go with Foster lol that would be amazing to get Rodgers in a keeper league.
May grab luck when the2nd and 3rd rounds come back to me...assuming I go McCoy with the first pick. -
sleeperMy strategy is never draft a QB, K, or Defense. K, irrelevant. The difference between a great kicker and an average kicker are not that great. Defense, hard to accurately predict and the differnce between a great defense and an average defense is small. QB, valuable, but unless you get Brees, Rodgers, or Brady you might as well use your higher picks for RB, WR, and TE. I typically draft RB, RB, WR, WR, RB/TE, RB/TE, WR. Getting 2 top tier RB's and 2 top tier WR's sets you up to win the league.

Luck in the 2nd or 3rd? That's really high, IMO.SportsAndLady;1247604 wrote:Don't have the stats in front of me but probably QB. It is a ppr league but just .5 per reception.

Agreed about K. Some leagues have QBs scoring highly even if they're not the top guys. Each league is different.sleeper;1247613 wrote:My strategy is never draft a QB, K, or Defense. K, irrelevant. Certain defenses are worth a mid-round pick. -

I know..but look at what Cam Newton did last year. And it's not like Indy has a good running game.hasbeen;1247621 wrote:Luck in the 2nd or 3rd? That's really high, IMO.
Plus, I can keep him for the next 5+ years if he turns out to be legit. -

Look what Peyton manning did his rookie year. I see your point but you can't overpay like that imo.SportsAndLady;1248015 wrote:I know..but look at what Cam Newton did last year. And it's not like Indy has a good running game.

Bad example. If he had Peyton in a keeper league, it was worth it to sit through that first year.hasbeen;1248244 wrote:Look what Peyton manning did his rookie year. I see your point but you can't overpay like that imo.
