I'm glad you didn't mention FDR. The policies from that administration may kill us....in our lifetimes.ptown_trojans_1 wrote:

You've got to be kidding me."America never had a better gold standard than Ronald Reagan"
Reagan isn't even a top 10 president in our history, let alone the "gold standard."
I still get a kick out of people who think that Reagan was conservative. -

Debatable. But, his legacy has been tarnished a little bit. However, he is still in the top 10 of Presidents in my book.Manhattan Buckeye wrote:

Reagan, I REMIND you, also RAISED taxes. There is a time for everything. The kooks & the nuts of "no taxes" will be swept aside. That dog doesn't hunt anymore. More Rs are coming to the realization that taxes have to go up. The hole is too deep. When you were part of the problem, you have to be part of the solution too.
The W tax cuts for the wealthy soon expire. Other changes are on the way. -
hookshot1st, I never said other Presidents didn't deserve the title of "Gold Standard". 2nd, Reagan's overall record on taxes was solid. 3rd, W didn't just cut taxes for the wealthy -- many Americans benefited from his tax cuts. This "tax cut for the wealthy" line is one of the great misleading mythologies of modern politics.

Gold standard? Hilarious. He was a good president. But gold standard?hookshot wrote: America never had a better gold standard than Ronald Reagan.
It was under his watch when the US changed from a net creditor nation to a net debtor nation. He spiraled the national debt out of control, inspite of presiding over a peacetime economy. Tripling the national debt was an unprecedented event for any administration.
People talk about his tax cuts, but nobody seems to recall the doubling of payroll taxes. In total taxes, he raised them, not lowered them.
In addition, the deregulation of laws reflecting the Savings and Loan requirements led to a massive bailout for these bankers.
Sorry, Reagan had a lot of good points, but sticking to conservatism is a misnomer to say the least. -

But the fact remains...since 1973, the purchasing power (overall wealth)of the bottom ninety percent has decreased. (9%)hookshot wrote: 1st, I never said other Presidents didn't deserve the title of "Gold Standard". 2nd, Reagan's overall record on taxes was solid. 3rd, W didn't just cut taxes for the wealthy -- many Americans benefited from his tax cuts. Whereby the top 5% is the only class that has seen their purchasing power (overall wealth) increase.

bman618^ More than that 9 percent if you look at the real value of money.

bman618I love listening to Reagan's early speeches. He had a ton of good points. He did some good things during his administration like increasing patriotism and confidence in our nation, but a lot of his other policies were not conservative and he did not cut government. Maybe it goes to show how far Washington is gone that Reagan couldn't do what he talked about.
