What to do with Gitmo?

  • Apple
Earlier this week Obama announced his intensions to close the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Given that he tried and failed with this idea earlier in his administration, it will probably be dead on arrival this time around too.

So what should USA do about Gitmo?

This article/opinion raises an interesting question: Why not just shoot them?
    http://www.nationalreview.com/article/431807/guantanamo-bay-detainees-why-not-shoot-them

Would shooting them be too extreme? What would be the repercussions?

    Other ideas?

I think we should wait for p-town's opinion since he clearly knows the most about foreign affairs and isn't biased at all.

Don't believe me? Just ask him.

Just don't close it. Fuck bringing those people to the US.

One of the arguments for closing it is that the Islamic terrorists use Gitmo as a recruiting tool.

The problem with this statement is, ok, so we close Gitmo and send them to crack rocks at Levenworth. Now Levenworth will be the recruitment tool!

Don't trade 5 high ranking terrorists for a traitor and it wouldn't be used much as recruiting tool.

    Also, [emoji23] http://m.washingtontimes.com/news/2016/feb/24/ag-lynch-obama-cant-enact-his-gitmo-plan-alone/?page=all

The best part is Obama signed a law that makes his plan illegal.

""That is the state of the law,” she said, pointing to the most recent defense policy law passed late last year, which cleared Congress on a bipartisan vote and which Mr. Obama himself signed into law."

LOL, perhaps don't wait until the last year to do something you said you would do on your first 100 days.

It also has been proven false that it is a recruiting tool. It's liberal propaganda.

I was just going to ask how gitmo is used as a recruiting tool lol I thought that made no sense but maybe I was missing something.

Also, just shoot them? Lol really? I'm no libtard by any means but this is the USA. We don't just fucking shoot people.

Great idea bring them to the US Prison System where they can make contracts with drug dealers, murders and gangs ... oh my
perfect recruiting grounds ... hell maybe they will rethink their future a become Uber drivers

How about just hang the bastard and move on... who give a fuck anymore.

Gitmo could be a great vacation spot .....

Yeah that's on the opposite spectrum of extreme. This isn't a nazi concentration camp.

It is hard to believe we are even having to have this conversation.

    We have elected the enemy.

I think we need a conversation if they are truly POW. If they are POW, which I think they are, then they should follow the standard practice of how POW are handled.

Admittedly, I don't know much about it.

Kind of lends itself to the question, "Is it "war" if no actual official declaration of war has been made?".

From what I understand, there are indeed official rules of engagement for war under the Geneva Convention. This includes the treatment of captured enemy combatants. Combatants must wear uniforms and bear the markings of their allegiance. If captured wearing such things, they are treated per the Geneva Convention as POWs. If not wearing the uniform, they are not considered POWs and can be treated as spies and dealt with in however the capturers decide, including being shot on the spot.

Unfortunately, shooting them on the spot, (or as Dear Leader prefers to do these days using drone attacks), eliminates the ability to get intel out of them. Killing them does, however, reduce the burden of putting them in detention camps like Gitmo.

Have the terrorists been following the Geneva Convention?

It's a new day folks, with these barbarians.

Guantanamo has been used by the US for the US since the early 1900's. We've basically rented it for all these years, long before AlQaida or ISIS. Why should we just stop now? It's set in a good area for a practical naval use. What's different?

As for bringing the detainees here, why? What good will that do? Do we already forget that regular prisoners are now being radicalized in our normal prisons?

No, don't close it down. Closing it will just seem like we're caving out of fear.
