  You are trying to measure the improving quality of life in terms of where one group has moved statistically on the economic rung. When you look at statistics of African Americans growing up in father absent homes one has to wonder how their lives are really being improved. When you see statistics like 2/3's in the black community one has say what is wrong. Granted they are increasing in other ethnic groups but none even close to that rate. Even black leaders are recognizing this problem.
  
  My Dad got laid off a couple of times when we were growing up. We didn't have a lot of money. But my brothers and I were happy. Grandpa had a little mini farm just down the road. We had to pick peas, beans, strawberries, etc.. My brother and I used to head over to grandpa's chicken coop to get some fresh eggs for breakfast. Always hoping for the double yoke while getting our hands pecked by the angry hens. My grandparents grew up during the Great Depression and had far less than you or I. They grew up in abject poverty. But they had one thing. A solid family structure to carry them through it and they were happy. I remember my grandparents telling me how they never ate out until they were adults. At first I thought the horror. But then again all the family interaction that goes into preparing a meal.
  
  In a different time there was an inner city life that provided different but similar family life experiences. Here it seems to me its deteriorating at an increasingly devastating rate. And has had a devastating affect on the black family who now populates these areas in large majorities. Back in the old days when crusty old white conservatives ruled the earth impoverished women had to worry about spreading their legs before a "fine young gent" who thought he needed a couple extra thrusts. But now its all good we are a compassionate people you know. So we got you when you are on your back. Requiring personal accountability is not absent compassion.

  Getting something from government appeals to everyone regardless of the color of their skin. It appeals to me and you. It appeals to the rich businessman and poor folks alike. Perhaps we have created this destructive monster where people vote their personal self interest above that of the national interest.

  Its a pipe dream because you, me, and Jmog don't have to pine for votes and contributions to our campaign warchest. We can thump our chest on some obscure political message board. But lets be honest with ourselves here. Large segments of the population want to gain personally via the federal trough (not to mention state and local governments). Whether its the poor seeking free "handouts" absent reasonable labor in kind or the rich wanting tax law to be catered to their liking its the federal monster we have created. Feared by some of the founders. We can either try to leash this thing or let it tear us apart.
