Dr. Ben Carson's compelling speech

Tremendous indeed. A disciple of Christ who offers not a word in advocacy for the unemployed (which is truly our most urgent problem) and a Doctor of Neurosurgery who still manages to fall into basic economic fallacies that reveal a failure to comprehend our modern non-convertible monetary system; among other dubious claims.
Pretty ironic considering how important he claims education to be. -
QuakerOatsI hardly expected you to 'get it'.

Was this really compelling to you, or just " re-affirming "?

1. It's frustrating to see another person lament the debt and deficit and say nothing about the plight of the unemployed...especially a man of God at a prayer function...when the deficit has gone down every year...more bubble thinking that is not compelling in any way.
2. The suggestion that we ought to have a 10% flat marginal tax rate because that is the rate that God prescribed for tithing in the Old Testament exhibiting a lack of understanding of the function of taxes in our modern economic system with a fiat currency that is non-convertible into any other commodity or currency not to mention he fails to mention what his "role model" Jesus might have thought because it doesn't fit with the modern conservative worldview.
3. He has Dr. Evil syndrome as indicated by his talking about how long it would count the amount of dollars in our national debt
4. Complains about the inefficiency of our healthcare system but obviously is unaware that the evidence from around the world indicates clearly that big gubmint single-payer healthcare gets more value for the dollar every where in the world and that is what he would support if he really cared about "efficiency" as opposed to adhering to a moral opposition to big government programs.
Basically your standard, conservative tropes but even worse coming from a man of God at an event devoted to Prayer. -

I think he advocated for universal healthcare for ALL Americans.4. I don't think he was advocating an 'Old Testament" approach as much as he was questioning the wisdom of punitive progressive taxation on the most productive in our society. He also did say "get rid of the loopholes".2. The suggestion that we ought to have a 10% flat marginal tax rate because that is the rate that God prescribed for tithing in the Old Testament exhibiting a lack of understanding of the function of taxes in our modern economic system with a fiat currency
There should n't be disincentives to earn more money or to being more productive.
If you are concerned about unumployment, then you need to question the guy who imposed a huge tax on the middle class claiming healthcare reform....and the one who nixed the Keystone pipeline( just one example). -

Do you even own a passport? I can tell you that healthcare in the Eurozone absolutely sucks. I've had a minor foot injury since early January and I'm scheduling (IMO, unnecessarily, more of a CYA) an appointment here in Singapore before we move to London because the odds of an M.D. even putting me on the calendar within 5 months is next to nothing.
U.S. > Developed Asia (read, the Dragon cities, or Tiger cities if you prefer that term) > socialized Europe as far as healthcare is concerned.
Bold is unintentional, but apt. European healthcare is terrible. -
QuakerOatsBS has totaly lost it. Gripes about a highly successful pediatric neurosurgeon who rose above it all because he learned that whining about a being a victim and running to government for solutions and help is NOT what made this nation great.
The contrasts could not have more stark: one man is a true success / one is artificially created; one man values the individual / the other values collectivism and big government; one man knows big government is our problem / one man thinks big government is the answer; one man is courageous / one man is spineless; one man is a true American through and through / the other man is not. -

Efficiency is the operative word. Those countries get more value for their dollar. Dr. Benson claimed he wanted healthcare to be delivered more efficiently. If that is your goal, and not the absolute best for people who happen to be able to afford it (which is dwindling) than big gubmint healthcare with strong ability to bargain for lower prices is the way to go. You yourself are saying your appointment is unnecessary???? lol.Manhattan Buckeye;1387484 wrote:"4. Ha, geez. I made no such gripe nor any claims about "being a victim and running to government". I merely suggested that despite his great success he doesn't appear to have a very enilightened self-interest and said nothing that one would call "compelling."QuakerOats;1387495 wrote:BS has totaly lost it. The Soviet Union collapsed because the people under the reign of communism wanted to be free. Not because they "went bankrupt."gut;1387422 wrote:I've noticed Boatshoes new favorite jibe is "Dr. Evil syndrome" every time someone mentions concerns about the ballooning debt.

A country with its own currency that is not convertible into a commodity or another currency cannot go bankrupt. The U.S. Treasury/Federal Reserve can never bounce a check unless they choose to do so. The only event in history relevant to the fears claimed by those on the right is France after WWI and they survived an attack by the bond vigilantes when it caused the Franc to depreciate and their economy expanded! Which is exactly what would happen here. -

Europeans are healthier and have more efficient healthcare systems because they don't pay for healthcare like your unnecessary foot problem that you admit is unnecessary.Manhattan Buckeye;1387564 wrote:Can you repeat this in English? -
Con_AlmaMuch of the health differences between Europeans and U.S. citizens relates to lifestyle stresses and diet.

And you don't suppose that it's even the slightest, most remote possibility that the reason communism sucked so bad is that it bankrupted the country?BoatShoes;1387569 wrote:The Soviet Union collapsed because the people under the reign of communism wanted to be free. Yes, a country can go bankrupt. You place entirely too much faith in value of the dollar as it relates to other countries. You act like inflation is no big deal when they are MASSIVE destroyers of wealth and savings. You're talking an event that makes the Great Depression look like good times, but in your keynesian kool-aid world this simply doesn't register. When you believe in endless printing of money, you really have to ignore and downplay the very real negative externalities.
Or perhaps we can state it in terms you can grasp...What happens when countries stop lending to us and there is, in fact, no way to finance huge deficits? What happens when we cut a few trillion out of gubmit spending, according to you? 100% inflation, no big deal -

It is unnecessary because I currently live in a country where if it got worse I would get immediate aid - same if I was in the U.S. If it gets worse 2 months from now I'd have to fly to the U.S. or wait several months in the Eurozone. There is a reason why there is so much medical tourism in SE Asia - and it ain't Americans flying over - it is the Euros. Do you understand this concept. Euros (typically young Euros who rarely need healthcare) love to brag about their healthcare but when they need it they realize how difficult it is to have any type of medium to major procedure.BoatShoes;1387574 wrote:Europeans are healthier and have more efficient healthcare systems because they don't pay for healthcare like your unnecessary foot problem that you admit is unnecessary. -
