How about obeying the Constitution? That one reform would end the imperial wars, end the police/surveillance state, and cut the budget by 90%.

I'm not a fan of the popular vote - it will concentrate too much influence in the large cities, and I don't want 95% of the geography ignored.

Actually the present system set-up is quite brilliant. POTUS is basically a state-weighted average of the popular vote. Then every state gets two Senators determined by state popular vote and giving equal representation. And with the House you get a little more proportional representation by district.

I can't think of a better set-up to protect the minority from being trampled by the majority. But we need term limits because the pecking order in Washington that has emerged as a result diminshes fairness.

Let's also restore the filibuster rule where the Senator has to hold the floor and speak. That should eliminate a lot of the obstruction both sides have employed recently to block anything short of 60 votes.

Get rid of Harry Reid and it solves 80% of the problem. He uses cloture votes to kill legislation he doesn't want debated or voted on. He and his buddies have also been on a historic pace for filling the tree (i.e. pork) which dooms otherwise amenable bills.

Public financing of elections. I saw a report a couple of weeks ago that rank and file congress members now spend 4-6 hours a day doing "call time" wherein they call donors for fundraising purposes...for themselves and their caucus as a whole. It is no wonder that Representatives are less informed on many issues than their aides are.

I agree that some ability to initially raise funds may help weed out less desirable candidates at the outset. However, these people shouldn't be putting in nearly a full day's work just trying to raise funds for their next election...

So you mean 1/2 week per year?

Also, popular vote won't work, as stated above. It'd be liberals forever.

I agree with this. Either public financing or cap the fundraising limit at $X.

Perhaps they should do their job first and fund raise on their own time? I realize they don't have a standard 40 hour work week, but they should be expected to do a certain amount of work during the day and if they want to spend their evenings and weekends funs raising, then go for it.

I am starting to like Glenn Reynolds' idea of special taxation for all money earned after leaving office.

I'm really liking the public financing of elections. In addition to that, I think we should follow the British system and only allow a specified amount of time for the campaign.

Interesting idea. Of course it does nothing for career politicians like Harry Reid that would appear to get favorable investment opportunities while still in office.

    Both good ideas.
