RE: National Conventions ...

What's the purpose of these? Are they sincerely more than just a giant pat on the back for the nominee (or incumbent, who is always presumed to be the nominee)?

Is there an actual function of them?

A giant waste of taxpayer money.

It's politics at its worst. A bunch of old men and women acting like retarded groupies fawning over sunshine up their ass and wool over their eyes.

Conventions have gone the way of the Dodo bird.

There was a time they actually meant something and served a very important purpose, now they are just free scripted propaganda pieces for the parties.

Doesn't even seem like worthwhile propaganda. The people who show up are already in support. Seems like a mix of intellectual incest and mental masturbation.

That's a good way of describing it.

I think these people would cheer almost anything. If you got up there and said "GFY" loud enough and with enough enthusiasm you'd get a roar from the crowd.

I literally laughed out loud. Glad today is a work-from-home day for me. Probably the funniest thing I'll read today.

Last night I heard Clinton listing off his accomplishments the past few years, and happened to mention GWBush along with several other former presidents. Imagine that guy's name (GWBush) being used by Bill Clinton in that environment- and the crowd cheered! Great stuff.

I had this exact convo over the weekend with friends, who are R and D, and down the middle. We all said they serve no purpose now a days, other than a huge pep rally that only plays to the base. Real voters won't care or matter about them. I haven't watched a second of them, and find them a huge waste of time and money.

I would rather have 2-3 more actual long form debates between Obama and Romney than this crap.

How is it taxpayer money? That would be illegal, wouldn't it?

I'd like to see an actual debate with all the candidates that will actually be on the ballot, honestly.

Although I would definitely like to see a series of long-form debates between several of the candidates as well.

Well, it's money that is from taxpayers, but I don't think it's tax monies.

    So yes and no. :D

The rhetoric from both parties is pretty suffocating. One of the main reasons I like Ron Paul is he's absolutely void of rhetoric.

I guess that $3 contribution on your tax return isn't something to quibble with since it's technically voluntary (ignoring where that $3 comes from with all the people who don't pay anything to begin with). But that barely covers the security for the events.

I caught that too. Critical thought gets checked at the door (along with ID's, haha).

Did get a kick out of the IDs thing. No ID required to vote. Just an ID required to show up in support at the convention.

I call disenfranchisement of the poor and racial minorities.

They probably only carded old white males. Wouldn't want any Republicans sneaking in to spoil the hate-fest.

Especially since we all learned what happens when a minority gets in the other hate-fest. Damn zoo animals...

Conventions and Electoral College are about as useful as tits on a boar. More than likely served a great purpose 150-200 years ago, but are just a waste of money now.

What do you propose to replace the Electoral College? Do you really want group think from dense population centers like CA, NY and Chicago to predetermine elections for you?

    I agree with you here.

I think this guy says it well. Both Republicans and Democrats have turned it into something else. Watch the video. Both Rep's and Dem's are guilty. Just ridiculous. This is why I hate politcs. All politics.
