Keeping the Rhetoric Civil

Little Jimmy Hoffa lets his kinder, gentler side shine though.

I know this isn't nearly as bad as little cartoon crosshairs on a map or anything...but, well, you know. ;)

Don't worry, it won't be too many years until Hoffa's compatriots do to him what they did to his daddy: put him inside a car, take it to a junk yard, and turn the car into one square foot of crushed metal with an organic center.

My prediction is that these outbursts of civility from the left have only just begun and will intensify the closer we get to 2012. We saw shades of it in Wisconsin, where Governor Walker's efforts to deal with deficits and help local communities deal with deficits (which are working by the way) were labeled as attacks against "working people", even though organized labor makes up about 7% of the US workforce. Subsequent efforts by Tea Partiers to bring responsible governance to DC has been met with some of the most outlandish, uncivil, and near-violence-inciting rhetoric I've heard in a long time.

Of course I don't expect the drones of society (and on this site) to speak out against this stuff, but the silence of self-proclaimed "independents" on this site regarding the left's rhetoric and the mainstream media's hypocrisy speaks volumes to me. I bet I'm not even listing half of what's happened in the last 6 months alone:

- Hoffa's rant above
- Maxine Waters' telling the Tea Party they can go to hell
- the Congressman from the CBC (can't remember his name) saying that Tea Partiers want to see blacks hanging from trees
- Joe Biden using terms like "terrorists" and "barbarians"

I'm too tired to remember them all and don't feel like Googling them right now, but the point remains: after the non-stop lectures from media/politicians about rhetoric following the Gabby Giffords shooting (where no link was discovered between the shooter and Tea Party/conservatism/talk radio/etc despite desperate attempts to prove such links), the hypocrisy with regard to the latest spewing from the left is overwhelming and I defy any liberal or left-leaning Democrat on this site to prove otherwise.

One man's opinion on how the President is tacitly approving the left's rhetoric by not condemning it, thereby exposing himself as a worthless and pathetic leader:

What I find interesting is those Democrat and Liberal mentality here on the OC have nothing to comment nor do they challenge those in their party that make such comments.

Those of the Democrat and or Liberal influence do you support this type of rhetoric?
• cruiser_96
I'll challenge... It's all Bush's fault, you bunch of hypocrites!!! :p

One of the most pathetic dodges I've ever seen of a question came from Carney (he's well named, by the way) when Jake Tapper tried to pin him down on this. Kudos to Tapper for even attempting it. He's one of the few White House reporters who isn't a total lap dog for Obama.

Carney is an arrogant, condescending doofus. Dude has to be related to Ms. Vasserman Shultz in some way.

I certainly didn't see anything offensive in Hoffa's comments. Fish, if this is all you've got, why bother?

I'm shocked - SHOCKED - that you would think Hoffa's "sons of bitches" rhetoric is acceptable.

I don't find it offensive either...I have no problem with any type of rhetoric used. Hoffa is a simple union stooge...I know this is just the way he talks. I think most intelligent people know the difference between colorful rhetoric and an actual call to violence.

That said, I'm just basking in the irony of you people soiling your knickers every time someone says the word "crosshairs," while looking the other way when Jimmy does his Goodfellas impersonation. Either you're for colorful rhetoric or you're against it...just pick a position and stick with it. ;)

Yeah I agree ,using the word "war" (as if Hoffa knows what war really is) 5 times in 1 paragragh and calling Tea Party members "son's of bitches" is the new civil discussion that Obama called for in January.

One word: HYPOCRISY.

Obama is the one who made it a point to call out what he (and other libs) determined were "violent" rhetoric, including Palin's so-called target page on her website. A big deal was made of cooling ALL references to violence -- the implication being that people on the right were the ones mostly guilty of such rhetoric.

Now the guy who INTRODUCES Obama at an event uses the language in question and it's okay?

Only if you're a hypocritical liberal.

Nobody on the right had any problem with political rhetoric; it was only the left that made it an issue.

Now it's THEIR issue.

LMAO! Good one.

And unions wonder why they're losing membership. Amazing stuff indeed.

Now THIS is civil rhetoric!

You know damned well that if the head of - say - the NRA introduced a Republican POTUS and told the crowd just before he introduced the president, ""We've got to keep an eye on the battle that we face -- a war on gun ownership. And you see it everywhere. It is the Democratic Party. And there's only one way to beat and win that war -- the one thing about gun owners is, we like a good fight. President Republican, this is your army, we are ready to march. Let's take these son-of-a-bitches out."

The media and you lefties would be HOWLING about the wacky radical right and that it's proof that we need more gun control laws, blah, blah, blah.

You really need to stop being a son of a bitch.

Heir Krugman chimes in...
Is it just me, or are the 9/11 commemorations oddly subdued?

Actually, I don’t think it’s me, and it’s not really that odd.
What happened after 9/11 — and I think even people on the right know this, whether they admit it or not — was deeply shameful. Te atrocity should have been a unifying event, but instead it became a wedge issue. Fake heroes like Bernie Kerik, Rudy Giuliani, and, yes, George W. Bush raced to cash in on the horror. And then the attack was used to justify an unrelated war the neocons wanted to fight, for all the wrong reasons.
A lot of other people behaved badly. How many of our professional pundits — people who should have understood very well what was happening — took the easy way out, turning a blind eye to the corruption and lending their support to the hijacking of the atrocity?
The memory of 9/11 has been irrevocably poisoned; it has become an occasion for shame. And in its heart, the nation knows it.
I’m not going to allow comments on this post, for obvious reasons.

He's such a piece of sh-it. A typical Eastern liberal elite who believes he knows what's best for everyone in the country and makes no apologies for it.

You would hope the families of those killed on 9-11 would swamp the Times with complaints, but I'll bet some of them actually agree with him, sad to say.

He's a total coward, too. He disabled the comments section for that piece of crap immediately after posting it because he can't handle having his views challenged.
