Belly35Federal Government shuts down…. means to you?
What if the Federal Government shuts down what affects will this have on you? (short term or long term)
Do you even know or have you thought about it?

ptown_trojans_1As someone who has friends in the Fed, I've talked with them at length what this entails.
My friends at DHS are considered nonessential and would not be working. One is in Customs and Border and the other is a contractor on cyber security.
Friends at the National Institute of Heath would also be sent home, deemed nonessential. He works mainly on coordinating state and federal heath issues.
I have another friend who is a contractor with Boeing and if there is a shudown, he is out of luck.
I;m sure other military contracts are the same, which is interesting considering how much of defense is contracted out.
Mainly though, what it is doing is it limits their work ability because they cannot travel to field offices or even schedule meetings beyond next Friday due to the unknown.
However, SS checks and Medicare payments will continue from what I've read and been told.
But, if you come here for the Cherry Blossoms, you can still see them, but won't be able to see anything else as all the museums would be closed. -
Thread BomberSorry Belly, I cant bring myself to read anything at aarp. ( not for 20 years anyway)
It may take a Government shut down or two to wake up these washington idiots and make them realize that there is a bottom of the barrel and it has been empty for a long time.
It won't be long before we see the grandma eating cat food commercials again, and the littlw johnny is giong to bed hungry again spots.
Unfortunately, what are considered essential services will continue to draw and drain ( DOD , HHS , DHLS). -
BGFalcons82Since no one is willing to understand what a $1,500,000,000,000 annual deficit looks like nor what a $15,000,000,000,000 accumulated national debt looks like, maybe they'll understand what no open national parks means, no Smithsonian Institution, no passport service, no government contracting, and non-essential services looks like. For most people, seeing is believing. So, after much deliberation, I'm going with Thread Bomber on this issue. Shut it down until it's fixed properly. When ObamaKare was being crammed down our throats, the politicians had no problem working through holidays and weekends. I wonder if they would stay late and long should their bloated gubmint shut down from all of their lustful spending?
Unfortunately, fixing the unsustainable national debt crisis isn't nearly as important as being able to blame someone for shutting down the parks' service. We ought to start a pool to pick a time when the first congressperson brings up grandma eating cat food. If Grayson was still there, I'd be about a month late with that choice. He would have probably brought his grannie in and forced her to eat puss-n-boots right there in the well of the House.
And we wonder how we got here... -
QuakerOatsIf someone is "nonessential", they should be permanently removed from duty.
My sense is, at least 30% of government is non-essential, and any true turn-around expert would eliminate it immediately. -

A good read from the Heritage Foundation on a "slowdown"

ptown_trojans_1Want to grab people's attention: Stop SS and Medicare payments, or at the very least threaten to do it. That will lead people to demand reform.
But, no one has the guts to do that. -
stlouiedipalmaYou're right, ptown. You need to actually hit some people in the wallet before they will act.
