Autism what is you take?

  I have a cousin who is Autistic... he is 17 and his mother treats him like he is 6. It is tough to watch because he seems like a caged animal and when his mother isn't around and you treat him like an adult he comes out of his cage and is a completely different person. He was diagnosed with Autism at an early age and has been poorly raised IMO by his mother ever since. I just feel if his mother had approached his problems in a different way he could have fared better in life. She basically sheltered him, but did not get him proper help for his problems and the years of protection have made him socially akward and afraid of everything.
  
  
  I don't know much about Autism, but I know some people think it is a myth and that the people with Autism are just slow or something. I am just curious what your take on it is.

  A lot of people blame Autism on vaccines. I don't believe it. Autism is very scary.

  I think Autism is a very real condition. However, I also think it is widely mis/over-diagnosed.
  Just as I believe the whole ADD condition is also widely mis/over-diagnosed.

  Very real, and a very real problem.
  
  My brother and his fiancee are both in the special education field, and they've both told me essentially what Center said.
  
  It is a huge problem, but it is widely misdiagnosed, and some of the times when it is diagnosed, it is actually another serious problem.
  
  But there is no doubt that it is real, and is a very difficult condition to deal with.
  
  From what i've read/heard, no way is it a myth. We're just still learning more about it.

  I am the father of an 2 autistic children,,,,,and I have to say that unless you live with it you will never understand it. My child is 5 but has the mental state of a 2 year old, but he wasn't always like that, when he was born he was a normal child hitting all milestones until six months, thats when he went in for his "needed" shots plus the doctor wanted to throw in a flu shot as well because she hadn't made my child scream enough. After all of those shots my child got really ill and had to be in the hospital for a month,,,,when he got out of the hospital he was a different child, he couldn't even hold his head up, he went backwards from that moment and it has been a fight since to get him to where he needs to be. So autism is very real and I wish that doctors would just find the cause and cure instead of worrying about themselves,,,,I say this because if vaccines are finally found to be the cause there would be some major lawsuits out there. I personally don't care about that,,,I just want to know why my little boy isn't like all the other five year olds out there and what can be done to get him there or at least as close as possible.

  See, this is exactly why I think autism is over and mis diagnosed.
  If doctors can't discern if it is a spontaneous condition or the result of ________ (?)
  They see symptoms and/or behaviors and and diagnose without structure.

  There are a lot of reasons that your child could be autistic besides 'vaccines'. Studies continue to show no link. Maybe someday they will find a link....maybe it's the combination of shots...or maybe it's just the age that autism just appears.
  
  I'm sorry for your pain...but I'm sure the doctor that gave your child recommended vaccines was not trying to hurt your child.

  No doctor gets to throw in anything without my permission. I am ultimately responsibile for the care of my children, not my doctor.

  Thank you for sharing your story. My heart goes out to you and your family, and it saddens me that there are people who would even question whether autism is a legitimate illness/medical condition.

  I still would like know how the other child got it? He doesn't mention any vaccines as the cause of the other child's autism.

  While it would be helpful to scientists and doctors to be able to determine how either of 2traps children were afflicted with autism, it really doesn't matter much what the actual causes are for this 2 children. The reality is they have autism, and now the question is what can be done to help them have the best life possible, and also to help 2traps entire family in dealing with the fact these 2 children have autism.
  
  2trap is under no obligation to provide any information on how or why either of the children became afflicted with autism, but I do appreciate that this individual shared a small part of their story since they have first hand knowledge as to what it's like having children afflicted with autism.

  I understand. But if you are going to blame one on vaccines, I think it is very relevant how the second one obtained it. No?

  Just like the last time...my point is that this is a common set of studies that is widely known. Anybody with a working knowledge of search engines and the ability to type can find the information he was referencing.
  
  I can understand if somebody was citing the mating habits of praying mantises. But in this case, the rule is absurd. If somebody doubts the claim, they can request more information or do the search him/herself.
  
  Meanwhile, I can make an outrageous, divisive, and hateful claim. I won't back it up with any proof, but as long as I don't say "studies show," it's considered an opinion and nothing will be done about it.

  My 7 year old wasn't diagnosed until this year and she is on the high fuctioning end of the spectrum,,,,,when we were going through the question and answer talk that doctors like to do we started thinking back to when she was a baby and she had all the warning signs from day one but at that time we just didn't notice them because when we would ask her doctor we would always get the same,"all babies are different" answer.

  In this article it talks abot toxic overload which I believe is one of the main factors toward autism,,,our children get way too many vaccines at one time, I mean we didn't get this many and we are fine,,,,and if all these shots are needed then why not break them up more, I have had my 5 year old get 6 shots at one time,,,,not because I wanted them but because my wife is the one that the doctor always talks to because she knows my answer would be no.

  ^ Right a study proves there is a possiblity of a link... It doesn't go looking for the root cause.
  
  I just don't get how kids with symptoms at different ends of the spectrum can both be diagnosed with Autism. It seems to me it is used as a blanket term for different diseases. IMO.
