It has all went downhill since i moved away. But seriously, i lived in Clintonville for about 3 years before moving to New Zealand for a few years, and am still planning on living in Columbus when i return...however, i'm not terribly surprised by this. I had noticed that something had "changed" in Columbus, and that things seemed to be getting worse. I mean, Columbus is still a great town, and has A TON going for it, i love it, but in many ways, it does seem to be heading in the wrong direction. Something needs to change, starting with Coleman.
Definitely count me among the demographic listed above who can't stand Coleman. And many of young, "hippy" friends felt the same way. They love Columbus, first and foremost, and were not pleased with Coleman at all. Just need more on our side. -
krazie45I get up every morning and put on my Kevlar vest just to go to class. Usually I'm able to dodge bullets and avoid grenades but occasionally I've seen people around me be murdered and raped in the streets. It's amazing how anyone could live in this crime-infested sewer known as Columbus!
Ok, now for the serious part. I've lived in Columbus for a few years now and haven't had any real problems with crime or murder. Yes, I do live in the University District but that's not exactly far from the East side of 4th St. which is where the problem areas seem to start. People, I'm from YOUNGSTOWN....I suggest you take a trip up north to there before you start chicken littling Columbus. -

Nobody cares about Youngstown, this thread is about the 37% raise in murders in Columbus. If you don't care to recognize the issue, then you are a part of the problem -

I'm just saying that I've never ran into trouble with these issues. It's one thing to say that Columbus has a spike in murders...that's fine. But it's another thing to label it a crime ridden crap hole (because it's not, I lived in one). I get that you're trying to use hyperbole to be effective but to some people it could be misleading. I don't support Coleman though and would be more than happy to vote him out of office. Outside of dressing up like Batman and defending the city myself I'm not sure what else you want me to do. -

Columbus also has some of the highest property crime and rape rates in the country. See the problem is, you didn't grow up in Columbus. You haven't seen what it used to be compared to now. Comparatively to 15 even 10 years ago, it IS a crime ridden shithole. That doesn't mean it is one giant ghetto, because it isn't, but to say that we don't have an overall crime problem here is asinine. -
PaladinI grew up not far from Columbus. Family went shopping at downtown Lazarus. Walked the statehouse grounds & fed the squirrels. Went to conventions at Vets Memorial. Had tickets for Ohio St. games. Coached in the State Championships at St. John's Arena. Knew people all around Columbus and dined there often. But, Columbus grew by annexation, much of it complete BS and expanded the boundaries to ridiclous extremes. Flight to the suburbs happened, taking wealth with them and leaving the city to poorer groups in decaying sections of town with few jobs and older homes in need of repairs. You are surprised what happened ? It fits the profile of most larger cities in Ohio.

People are just afraid to report about Amish crimes, that's why you don't hear about it. They are worse than the Mafia when it comes to "shutting up" witnesses and reporters.Jason Bourne;458391 wrote:Ha! The Amish are muggin and killing us every day! That's not true.
And I agree -. As a matter of fact I agree on your entire last post. -

http://www2.nbc4i.com/news/2010/aug/22/6/2-teens-forced-disrobe-during-robbery-ar-203683/
Police were called to the 100 block of East 9th Avenue around 3 a.m. on reports of an armed robbery.
That’s in the area of Ohio State's campus.
Two male suspects entered a residence armed and masked and demanded property from the 19-year-old Nathan Weisblat and his 18-year-old girlfriend.
"Two black males came to the house and kicked the back door open and said there were police, that they had gone on a domestic disturbance call and immediately I knew they weren't police," Nathan said.
He said the men covered the bottom of their faces with their shirts and pointed guns at Weisblat and his girlfriend. They were told to get on the ground and they complied.
Then, Weisblat said, the men asked Nathan and his girlfriend to take their clothes off.
"I said no, so they pistol-whippped me. I tried to get up, again they pistol-whipped me and cracked me in the skull," he said. -
ptown_trojans_1Damn, I didn't know it had gotten that bad.
I left in 2007 and looks like things have gotten worse. I used to live at the corner of E 12th and N 4th, the edge of campus area. It was fine, but started to get sketchy right when I left. -

Wow, really? Grandview Hts, Worthington, Riverlea, parts of Dublin and Hilliard, and many parts of Columbus all inside pf 270 are "rough?" WTH? -

yea he definitely left off some nice parts...
The # of nice to shitty when talking about Columbus and surrounding suburbs is pretty good if you ask me, I just think the bad areas are pretty bad and are starting to creep out which kinda sucks -

This.
It's disheartening to hear about all the shootings this year, but they are almost all in one of two areas. The near East side and the North side. Stay out of those two areas and there really isn't a reason to be in fear. -

Or, we could have a city administration that actually does its job and addresses a growing problem before it gets further out of hand. Oh wait, I forgot who was mayor. -

Ah yes, rather than demand a fix for the problem, lets just avoid it And hope it never affects us! And it is more than just what you claim, its the east side as a whole, the north side, the south side and the near west side. All of those pockets of "nice" are mainly not Columbus proper. I would feel comfortable saying that 75% of the city of Columbus proper is shit

BigAppleBuckeyeHonest question: has it really gotten that bad? Granted, I moved away from Columbus in 2000, but for the most part I considered it a pretty safe, quiet city. I mean, Summit and that area east of campus, scrolling downtown, were VERY sketchy. And areas east on 161 were pretty shady, but overall German Village, Grandview, UA, etc were all nice areas. What happened??

The first steps would e more police presence in the problem areas

Gview, UA, etc... are all still really nice. I don't think anything has happened. I think the bad areas historically are still bad, and the good ones still good, for the most part. I just the bad areas have declined significantly, if that makes sense. So they are now super bad. Previously, just bad. -

Those areas are not the city of Columbus. The north side is not a historically bad area either. Northland and forest park used to be very nice

I graduated from OSU in 2000 and I thought anything east of N 4th was pretty sketchy then. -

Obviously not enough. Look at bexley, they are right in the middle of a ghetto. They have very little crime. Its not because the criminals are nice to the rich bexley people and leave them alone, its because bexley has a very active police force that makes their presence known. There are some districts in Columbus where cruisers have a 15 minute or more response time from one end to the other. The brilliant redistricting plan didn't help eitherPrescott;459647 wrote:What is the police presence in the problem areas?

You are assuming more police presence would equal less crime. I don't think that is always true.Obviously not enough.
I don't know about Bexley's police force. I drive through that area on a regular basis and rarely see a patrol car. I Think Bexley's lower crime rates are an indicator of the income level of it's residents and not the presence of it's police force. -

I was just in Bexley about two weeks ago. It is surrounded by shitty neighborhoods. (I was really surprised at how the quality of houses changed when I drove under the overpass and into/out of Bexley.) I would think their income level would encourage their neighbors to steal everything they can get their hands on.
