New Bill Gives Obama ‘Kill Switch’ To Shut Down The Internet

AppleGovernment would have “absolute power” to seize control of the world wide web under Lieberman legislation.
Not surprising this is being pushed forward by the liberals and I wouldn't be surprised if some republicrats are also in favor of this. Kind of scary if you ask me...As we have repeatedly warned for years, the federal government is desperate to seize control of the Internet because the establishment is petrified at the fact that alternative and independent media outlets are now eclipsing corporate media outlets in terms of audience share, trust, and influence.

FairwoodKingThis is bullshit. We are not going to lose the internet.

believerThe Internet pisses off the Beltway Elite (particularly the left) because the mainstream media is no longer the only game in town.
Political suicide if these idiots make this law. -
BoatShoesWell, I just read through much of the "Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act" and in sum, it aims to create "The Office of Cyberspace Policy" within the Department of Homeland Security. Personally, I'm not sure if this is necessary but nothing I read in there is anywhere close to the fear mongering on that awful, awful website. There's a link to the PDF on there.
Some pretty awesome ads on that website............. -

hmmm... which amendment stipulates freedom of speech? Websites like the one where the article appeared is precisely why the government wants to control the internets. They've lost control of public debate and want to get that control back. -
ptown_trojans_1Site has bias, and I haven't read the bill (don't have time), but it is an interesting question. The internet and cyber security is an area that does need secured as there are attacks every day. But, the line is murky, undefined and perhaps this bill crosses it. Not fully sure yet though.

tk421The first politician, especially a Democrat since they are supposed to be the party of the youth, will see a massive riot the moment anyone even thinks of shutting down the internet. The youth of this country may be totally apathetic about politics, but the moment you take away there phone, twitter, Facebook, etc. they will get pissed.

That applies to all generations. I know just as many older generation who use twitter, FB and their cells as the younger generations. -

The feds are scared of websites read by a bunch of loons convinced beyond the point of no return that there is a shadow government so they hide with fool's gold and survival seeds in the basement of their farms out in Idaho? I'm sure that's the first thing on Admiral Mullen's mind everyday. -
I Wear PantsIf the EFF isn't upset about it it isn't a big deal.
