Obama set to send 1,200 troops to US-Mexico border

SQ_CraziesWell I know that, I'm saying what's the policy on illegal immigrants--they don't have the legal rights that we do, do they?

Cool, thanks.Glory Days wrote:
yeah, but your friend is an MP. the rest of the military is trained to engage and destroy the enemy with fire power. for example, my tool was a M1A1 Main Battle Tank, not a set of handcuffs. if only MPs were being sent to the border that is one thing, but the MP branch is not very large and already has duties here stateside, so i doubt these 1,200 are MPs.cbus4life wrote:
One of my best friends is an MP who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and from what he told me of his training and service, i would trust those specific detachments to perform a real law enforcement function.Glory Days wrote: considering the military is not a law enforcement agency, they will never be allowed to make arrest and such. they just arent trained for it. but in the end, its better than doing nothing. them being there and just driving around should be able to deter some illegals and maybe atleast force them to turn around. -
Cleveland Buck1200 troops huh? Problem solved. One soldier guarding every 2 miles of border.

Exactly. It does little except try to make Obama not look like a complete idiot about illegal immigration, which is a failure.Cleveland Buck wrote: 1200 troops huh? Problem solved. One soldier guarding every 2 miles of border. -

ah ok. well, probably because if they didnt the ACLU or someone would be bringing lawsuits and whether they have a case or not, its going to cost money. so might as well take a few seconds and read them their rights.SQ_Crazies wrote: Well I know that, I'm saying what's the policy on illegal immigrants--they don't have the legal rights that we do, do they? -

now if that one Soldier had a Ma Deuce, 2 miles between each Soldier wouldnt be that badCleveland Buck wrote: 1200 troops huh? Problem solved. One soldier guarding every 2 miles of border.

Mr. 300Looks like most here are very wary of this decision. After the display we saw from DC with Calderon, I seriously doubt this really going to amount to anything more than glorified foot patrol without live ammo or armoured vehicles. Obama's poll numbers are falling dangerously low, and he knows he must do something to try and right the ship.
I see it strictly as a political move at this point. If it turns out to have some teeth to it, then I'll eat my words. -

This is exactly why I feel our presence in the Middle East is no longer needed, especially Iraq. Our military is not a policing and nation bulilding entity. However, I do think if we positioned, say 10,000 troops on the border, they could detain and send these people back to Mexico. IMO, ultimately it would lead to less people trying to cross the border illegally. Currently, they can cross rather easily, with 10,000 soldiers, won't be nearly as easy and may deter many.Glory Days wrote: considering the military is not a law enforcement agency, they will never be allowed to make arrest and such. they just arent trained for it. but in the end, its better than doing nothing. them being there and just driving around should be able to deter some illegals and maybe atleast force them to turn around. -

I think 10,000 soldiers rotating say every 3-6 months on the southern border would be a lot better for them than being oversees in Iraq or Afghanistan. I don't think too many in the military would complain. What also pisses me off is we have had confirmed reports of the Mexican military crossing over into the U.S. for years and helping illegals. That's pathetic, that no one in D.C. will ever stand up for our sovereign right to protect our border.dwccrew wrote:

believerA laughable bullshit political move by Obama.
-
74LepsFirst thought I had was that Obama was sending them to AZ to prevent US citizens from stopping illegals entering the country. DOJ wants to take AZ to court over its law.

SQ_CraziesThe answer is just as clear. I feel like if you have to have it explained to you, you've literally just been brainwashed. I'm not even joking, I don't even think it's an issue of battling fundamental ideas.

cbus4lifeYea, i've drank so much kool-aid my tongue is going to be red forever.

SQ_CraziesHey, if Obama taught us anything it's that you don't have to say anything to say everything right? CHANGE!!! YES WE CAN!!!

And he ain't talkin' enemy as far as D's vs. R's are concerned... -
bman618This is just a PR move to try and appeal to the folks who want something done about the border before the election. This is like sticking your pinky against Hoover Dam to try and patch up a 50 foot hole.

The National Guard had bullets when they attacked my fellow students at Kent State in 1970. Now if the Guard can just shoot the right people instead of the wrong people, we will all be better off.Belly35 wrote:ptown_trojans_1 wrote: Well, I guess he was listening.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/05/25/AR2010052503227.html?hpid=topnewsPresident Barack Obama will deploy 1,200 National Guard troops to help secure the U.S.-Mexico border, according to an administration official and an Arizona congresswoman.
Obama will also request $500 million for border protection and law enforcement activities, they said.
The National Guard troops will work on intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, intelligence and blocking drug trafficking.
Good move, and hopefully more punch and follow through comes from Congress.
Will they have bullets also? -
