Doctor doesn't want to treat Obama supporters

You asked me a question and I answered it. If my dad's life was saved by a dick doctor, then he and I would have a good laugh about it afterward.LJ wrote:
Why would you have a good laugh about a kidney tumor twice the size of his kidney? Want me to explain how you aren't being funny and struck a personal nerve with me now?Footwedge wrote:

I never said they were just dick doctors...but they are in fact dick doctors. They deal in urination problems and sexual problems for males. Those 2 listed are the functions of one's dick, So, my statement is true. This guy is a dick doctor.LJ wrote:
urologists deal with one of the strangest forms of cancer, kidney cancer. I wouldn't just call them "dick doctors".Footwedge wrote: The guy is a dick doctor...very appropos.
Calling one a dick doctor is far different than calling a doctor a dick. But in the context of this thread, this dick doctor is also an obvious dick....and as such, will probably have an entry made on his behalf in dickipedia. Do you want me to explain about Peter Piper and his pickled peppers now?
Secondly, if I struck a personal nerve by accident, that is no reason to attack me for it. [/b]Thirdly, there are plenty others that post here regularly that have battled their own cancer. Writer Buckey is one, and yours truly has undergone both radiation and chemotherapy for cancer as well.
I am happy to hear that your dad has been successful so far in his personal battle. -
LJI just find it extremely childish and disrespectful. These dr's put in hours of schooling and work that none of us could imagine and you have the audacity to mock a sector of medicine by calling them "dick doctors". It personally offends me, a lot, and I would appreciate it if you cut it out.

Not knowing how to treat. -

In reading some case law, the sign won't get him in any trouble. A patient would have to try to schedule an appointment and be rejected, after that they would have to have their condition deteriorate before they could find another Doctor in order for the Doctor refusing treatment could be sanctioned.Glory Days wrote:

I also read that a Dr. has no duty to treat a stranger in his office except "in extremis". -
FairwoodKingIf my doctor pulled a stunt like that, I would tell him to go fuck himself. Then I would report him to the AMA.
-
BCSbunkI wonder if this was his line of thinking. NOT SAYING IT IS for the more dense minded of our posters out there that struggle with reading comprehension.
Lets see I know that over 90% of the African American population voted for Obama and I cannot put out a sign that says If you are African-American seek Urologic care elsewhere. However I can eliminate over 90% of them by putting up a sign that says If you voted for Obama seek your Urologic care elsewhere.
Hmmm perhaps them right wingers are much more clever than we thought??????? -

Like it or not, a physicians do NOT have to treat anyone who simply walks into their office.
This is still America -- at least until Obama and his cronies get through their entire agenda. -

I have a hunch your doctor would smile and tell you to "have a nice day."FairwoodKing wrote: If my doctor pulled a stunt like that, I would tell him to go fuck himself. Then I would report him to the AMA.
Report him to the AMA? Isn't that like crying, "If you don't start playing nice in the sandbox, I'm going home to tell my mommy"? LMAO -

My own urologist, Dr. Steiger, has a specialized license plate on his car that reads DICDOC. Why don't you give him a call and personally attack him for being "extrememly childish and disrespectful".LJ wrote: I just find it extremely childish and disrespectful. Where did he say he would let someone die?gibby08 wrote: So you're ok with a doctor potentially letting a patient die because they support President Obama
Where did he say he would actually refuse anyone who walked past the sign to get treatment?
I'm not saying I think his method is a good idea, but there is nothing illegal with what he did and nothing against his oath as a doctor. -

Actually, the 2nd part you bolded fits right with what he's doing. He is doing what he thinks is right for the society as a whole and making a stand against Obamacare.BCSbunk wrote:
Hopefully this despicable human being will have his medical license revoked. The Hippocratic Oath (Modern Version)
“I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant:
I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow.
I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures [that] are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism.
I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug.
I will not be ashamed to say "I know not," nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient's recovery.
I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know. Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God.
I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person's family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick.
I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.
I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm.
If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected while I live and remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling and may I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help.”
I don't get how this is that much different than doctors who refuse to take medicare patients? -

Maybe you don't get it, while I don't agree with what he did, he did absolutely nothing wrong ethically or legally.FairwoodKing wrote: If my doctor pulled a stunt like that, I would tell him to go fuck himself. Then I would report him to the AMA. -
I Wear PantsHe did something wrong ethically. It's the same as saying "If you are Catholic/Republican/enjoy wine/whatever you aren't welcome". It isn't acceptable and it doesn't matter if he follows through with denying care or not.

Glory Days
i would say it does matter if he follows through with care or not. my doctor can hate my guts, aslong as he does his job and treats me i dont care. he isnt my friend, he is my doctor.I Wear Pants wrote: He did something wrong ethically. I Wear PantsIt's a conflict of interest though. If he hates you it's more likely that he'll make a mistake even if it is accidental.
Although this isn't nearly as big a deal as it's been made out to be. The dude's a pretty huge idiot but that isn't anything special. I find it disappointing that he did it but until he actually follows through I'm not going to be real outraged. -

I agree. As long he doesn't refuse treatment to anyone, he has done nothing wrong.Maybe you don't get it, while I don't agree with what he did, he did absolutely nothing wrong ethically or legally. -

He can refuse treatment to as many non "in extremis" strangers as he wants. It's just people who he already has a relationship with that he cannot leave hanging.Prescott wrote:

bigkahunaThis is way off topic, but in response to calling this guy a "dick doctor"
People do this all the time with doctors and their titles. A lot of people don't know what the titles are, so they apply nick names to them. I have no idea what OBGYN stands for, so I say Vag Doctor. People call therapists/psychiatrists shrinks. It's to give them a common name, so common people can identify with what they do.
As far as this case goes. Obviously you can look at it differnt ways.
On one hand he hasn't refused to treat anyone. You see something like this on Grey's Anatomy all the time. One doctor won't do what you want, so you find a doctor who will. Saying "no" to a patient isn't a crime necessarily, but the reasoning could be. If you say no to a patient because you don't believe in the surgery for ethical, risk,... reasons, then there is nothing illegal there. If you refuse to treat someone because of their sex, race, BELIEFS... then I believe it it illegal.
Even though I don't agree with his views. I don't necessarily believe he should get in trouble for it. The thing that saves him is the "You should find treatment elsewhere" This is basically the same thing as one doctor referring a patient to another doctor.
Should he get in trouble? No, probably not. Will he get in trouble? He would/could possibly lose business, and someone could possiby try to sue him. The decission on punishment will be decided in court. -
queencitybuckeyeAs long as he's not the only urologist in the area, he should be allowed to treat or not treat anyone he chooses based on any characteristic not prohibited by law.
Stupid way to make a legitimate point, though. -
Swamp FoxYou may say you are not interested in your doctor being your friend as long as he treats you, but I would much rather have a doctor who was my friend as well as my doctor. I can't believe the number of people who are trying to defend this doofus. We pretty much know why, don't we? He is anti Obama and many who post here hate Obama so much that they will defend anyone who is against him.
-
bigkahunaI'm a Obama supporter. I voted for him in 2008, and there is a damn good chance that I will again in 2012.
However, I don't feel comfortable saying that this guy SHOULD be charged with something or have his license revoked. Do I think he will? There is a good chance of it. I really don't think he has done anything legally wrong yet. Like I said before, the fact that he tells them to find urology treatment elsewhere is the technicality that saves him. He is basically referring patients to other doctors, which happens all the time. -

Con_AlmaThere is a Catholic gynecologist in town that will not prescribe birth control and will not take on any patients that use it. I've seen his house and I know the schools his kids go to. He appears to be doing very well financially.
