Ohio State 2010-2011

cruiser_96What happens next year? Who redshirts? Who steps up?
Can they return to the top 3 when the NCAA's return to PA?
They lose 5 seniors. 3 of which are multiple time AA's as well as NCAA finalists.
I have no answers, only questions that nobody may have the answers to.
Big returners
Triggas- AA this season. If Stieber does not RS where does Nikko fit in. Can't see him going up to 133.
Paddock- Looked tough all season. Should step up his game. Does he stay at 133?
Jameson/Nemec. Can one of these wrestlers separate themselves from the other one, or will one drop to 149?
Sponseller. Unbelievable weight class this season. Obviously Colt is good enough to AA, he's down to his last opportunity next year.
Magrum. Freshman who has potential to do very well. Qualified this season should also step his game up.
Heavyweight- Who? Will it be an improvement? I have tremendous respect and appreciation for Como, but he looked undersized whenever he wrestled a top heavyweight.
Anywho, thats something to marinate on while we get ready for our trip next season to PA.
Go Bucks! 94 -
THE4RINGZI read in the local paper that next years match against Michigan will be held at Sponseller's Alma Mater, West Holmes High School in Millersburg.
-
USMCdevil05I think if Stieber doesn't red shirt we may see an all american not getting in the line up. Triggas is tough but he could very well not be in the line up. Paddock will improve so much over the summer. I think we may see Palmer at 141 and Jameson at 149 and Nemec at 157. 174 could possibly be Demas but I think he will red shirt. Hvy will be Hiles. He has put in his time and won some good opens and now it is his turn. I will definetely be making the trip to State College Next year! Go Bucks! Put in the work in the off season and live the dream in March next year!
-
fvwrestler2001what about magrum, didnt he originally sign on at 174 will he stay at 197 or make the cut to a lower weight

It will be Michigan State. Not UM.THE4RINGZ wrote: I read in the local paper that next years match against Michigan will be held at Sponseller's Alma Mater, West Holmes High School in Millersburg. -
girevikI have always wondered why Tom Ryan didn't get discredited by wrestling fans the way Tom Brands did. I've even heard tOSU fans cry about Iowa having "2 recruiting classes." Tom Ryan didn't exactly make the trip from Hofstra by himself, did he?
I'm pretty sure the Buckeyes' best days under Tom Ryan are behind them. -

#1) Mike Pucillo is on record as saying he was leaving Hofstra BEFORE Tom Ryan was even offered the job. That's how the interview went when I read it.
#2) The cat has had 4 or 5 years as the head coach for the Buckeyes. And because he doesn't duplicate (or would it be triplicate) a runner-up finish, all of the sudden he will never create another great team??????? Your statement is unreasonable. No one on these forums knows what the future holds.
That being said, I don't think next year has the dynomite that last year or even this year had. What I think it does have is amazing potential with HIGH LEVEL wrestlers - the kind that may be able to attract other high level wrestlers. Not to mention TOM RYAN!!!!!!! will still be the head coach. He is the man. -
MoparmanI belive Stieber has said that he will do what the coaches want from him wether that be red shirt or starting as a freshman. To me I think Logan can handle Triggas and take the spot if thats what it comes down to. I was also thinking on another thread somewhere people were saying Triggas would probably bump up 1 weight class could be wrong though

1. Mike Pucillo wasn't the only wrestler that came with him from Hofstra. Why let pesky little things like facts get in the way of such a good story though?cruiser_96 wrote: Two things on this:

2. How does he get credit for "creating" anything at tOSU? His success has come from some guys that Russ Hellickson recruited and an NCAA champ and a qualifier that he brought with him from another school.
You can put as many exclamation points in your reply as you'd like, they won't change the facts. -
fvwrestler2001i think if both of the steibers come to tOSU and phillips does also.
along with jameson, palmer, nemec, and magrum maturing, they will have a solid lineup
i think that logan and phillips could AA as true freshman plus the other 4 getting better.
that sounds like some solid kids right their that could make some noise (and all OH boys has gotta make ya happy) -

cruiser_96For discussion's sake, let's grant the points that Pucillo was not the only transfer. Rella, Gardner and <insert whom you'd like> all transferred as well. Add to that that Palmer, Berg-a-licious, Jaggers, CoMo, Humphrey, Nemec, etc. were already there when Tom Ryan showed up on the scene.
With these facts in view, your statement was that Tom Ryan & Co. will never see better than what they have.
Once again, this statement is unreasonable. IF... IF the one indicator of the future is the past, then what Tom Ryan did at Hofstra HAS TO at least give some hope to the Buckeyes.
Along with the previous statement, one would be forced to assume that you don't think guys like Stieber(s), Garcia, Demas, Jameson, C. Palmer, Margrum, Paddock, Hiles, etc. have not the ability to excel as a team and do so with the ability to achieve a top 8 or higher finish. And once again, I believe that that statement is unreasonable. -

For discussion's sake? It's a fact. How noble of you to grant validity to the facts that I posted. Also, you left out Chris Vondruska, so there was at least 1 more. I don't think he AAd, but If I'm not mistaken he had more wins than anyone else on the team that year and I know for sure he qualified and scored points.cruiser_96 wrote: For discussion's sake, let's grant the points that Pucillo was not the only transfer. It's strange though, I never heard any talk any where about how he was only successful because he had 2 recruiting classes to work with. You must have to win just a little more for that to apply.
This year was as close to his own team as he's coached at tOSU, how did that all work out? How did HIS recruits do at the NCAA tournament? Maybe next time you make a thread asking for people's opinions you should put in there that you're only interested in their opinion if they agree with you. -
futurestatechampWhy do you feel the need to completely bash Tom Ryan and his accomplishments??
-

How is posting my opinion and listing a few facts about the last few years of the wrestling program at tOSU "bashing Tom Ryan and his accomplishments"?futurestatechamp wrote: Why do you feel the need to completely bash Tom Ryan and his accomplishments??
I feel that he benefitted greatly from the guys who were there when he got there (the guys Russ Hellickson recruited, you know, the guys who won a lot and were still there scoring points for him this year) and the guys he brought with him from Hofstra (you know, the other guys who won a lot) being on the same team. How did the guys who he recruited to tOSU do this year at the NCAA tournament? Do you even know? -
cruiser_96You are MORE THAN entitled to your opinion. Trust me on that. But your statement is based on one year!? And that is it? From this point forward, Tom Ryan can never have a better year because the first year with his recruits was 8th in the nation!?!?! And you say that THIS is a reasonable statement!?!?!?!
How about couching your opinion like this: One interesting thing that I've noticed is that this is the first year with a mojaority of Tom Ryan recruits. While I realize the mantra is 2nd is not the standard, 8th must be unacceptable! The coaching staff will have to do much better in the upcoming years with recruiting, maintaining and developing talent if they ever think they are going to bring a National title to Columbus.
However, you chose to state that the Buckeyes will never finish better than 8th because of the one reason posted and that was that Tom Ryan can't do it with his recruits. (Which, and I'll let it slide, is a bit of a technicallity.) He needed Hellickson's recruits AND his recruits to do something. And since Russ is no longer there... Good luck.
I beg to differ is all. -
girevikMy statement is based on his career as tOSU, but if saying I'm basing it on one year makes you feel better...
How is saying that the team s he's had are not teams that he has completely put together a "technicality"? Explain it to me. The top point scorers this year were already there when he got there. This wasn't even the 1st year with his own recruits, that will be next year.
They're a young team. There, I laid the ground work for you, just say that next year when it doesn't go so well at the NCAA tournament.
Wait till next year. Just say that after they don't do so well the following year.
That is how I feel about it, you obviously disagree. I could have posted some of the vile and hateful things I've seen posted and heard about other coaches in a similar situation, but I didn't.I'm pretty sure the Buckeyes' best days under Tom Ryan are behind them. -
cruiser94What was Russ Hellickson's best finish at the National Tournament. Would a Hellickson Team been able to have back-to-back runner-up finishes. We cant say. Did he ever have 3 straight top-10 finishes?
Tom Ryan has finished top 10 three out of four years. I would like to say that these results have as much to do with the coaching staff as the head coach himself. As long as the staff does not lose anyone else, I would have to say future is pretty bright for tOSU Wrestling Buckeyes.
I do not expect to see the Buckeyes in the top-10 next season, but that does not mean I will not root like hades for them. They should be competitive & probably have 2-3 AA's but I look for them to rebound in 2011-2012. He has some GREAT recruits coming in & I am very optimistic.
Did Vandruska compete at the NCAA's 3 years ago? I don't know jusk asking. -
cruiser_96Where did Pucillo come from? And Vondruska? Tell me again whose recruits they were.
Again, I'm not hating... just stating.
One other thing. It's not that I don't like that your opinion differs from mine... it's more about the foundation that the opinion is built upon. If someone wanted to say that Lance Palmer was a bad wrestler because he never won in his a placement match, they be correct, right? While that fact is true (4th, 8th, 4th, 2nd), it is a very weak foundation to use. He's only one of two 4x AAs in the history of the Ohio State wrestling program.
Side note to all: Does anybody know the number of 4x AAs for all of the NCAA and the total number of 2x NC? Which is greater? I was discussing this trivia with some buddies of mine and we weren't sure which would be greater.
One last thing: Recall my sttement that noone knows what will happen next year. Consider Russ Hellickson's best finsh in the NCAA tournament??? 3rd. It happened in his last two years there. How unfortunate (and untrue) would it have been for someone to say that the years with Coleman, Randleman and Holman are it for him. He'll never see that kind of success. Again, my point is that we don't know. -
USMCdevil05girevik,
Get off of this thread! This is a thread that someone started to try and be posotive towards "THEE" Ohio State Buckeyes! Go find your own Iowa thread and start fights on there, (Edited for attack) Fab1b! No one even said anything about your precious Tom Brands on this thread. Tom Brands is a great coach, that is why he has had so much success at the NCAA tourney these past 3 years. Tom Ryan is alos an amazing coach, which is why he has had great success these past 3 years also. I don't think your bone to pick is with Tom Ryan, but with Thee Ohio State University. Go start your own Hawkeyes thread. For you to say that the best years for Ohio State and Tom Ryan are behind them is OBSURD! You are kidding me right? (Edited for attack, cursing) Fab1b! You can say what you want because this is the land of the free and the home of the brave, because of great men and women! But when the Buckeyes beat your precious Hawkeyes in a few years and win a National Title, I will start a thread just for you baby boy! Until then, keep talking your ignorant (Editing for cursing) Fab1b, and ride your high horse boy! -
girevikOh noes, the prepubescant mouth breathing minortiy of the site has chimed in. It might go away if I ignore it, what fun would that be though?
girevik,
Get off of this thread! This is a thread that someone started to try and be posotive towards "THEE" Ohio State Buckeyes!
The guy who started the thread said that I am "more than entitled to my opinion." He hasn't came right out and said it, but I assume that he doesn't mind if I post here.
Go find your own Iowa thread and start fights on there, (Edited) Fab1b!
Do you usually care about how a "lifeless loser piece of crap" feels, or are you turning over a new leaf here?
No one even said anything about your precious Tom Brands on this thread. Tom Brands is a great coach, that is why he has had so much success at the NCAA tourney these past 3 years.
I hear and see a lot of tOSU fans trying to discredit him for the situation that he had when he took the job at Iowa, the same people pretend that Tom Ryan wasn't in the same boat when he took over at tOSU even though he clearly was. Why is that?
Tom Ryan is alos an amazing coach, which is why he has had great success these past 3 years also. I don't think your bone to pick is with Tom Ryan, but with Thee Ohio State University. Go start your own Hawkeyes thread.
I think I'll just keep posting in this one, thanks. Also, I'm not a Hawkeye fan, just pointing out hypocrisy where I see it.
For you to say that the best years for Ohio State and Tom Ryan are behind them is OBSURD!
I take comfort in the fact that you don't think it's absurd. It would hurt my feelings if a smart guy like you thought it was absurd.
You are kidding me right?
Nope.
That makes you look and sound like a jealous little baby mama's boy (Edited)!
Now you just hold it, you hold it right there, mister! Didn't you read the thread about the use of naughty words at the top of the page?
You can say what you want because this is the land of the free and the home of the brave, because of great men and women!
Whoa, hold up there Captain America, I thought I wasn't allowed saying this stuff here. I'm sssssooooo confused.
But when the Buckeyes beat your precious Hawkeyes in a few years and win a National Title, I will start a thread just for you baby boy!
How rare, it's certainly something I never thought I'd see. It's an Ohio State Buckeye wrestling fan saying "Just wait till next year..." Get the camera, kids!
Until then, keep talking your ignorant (Edited) and ride your high horse boy!
I don't even know what that means, are you experimenting with some new language? Anyway, the language, AGAIN? I am shocked to see a respectful lad like yourself breaking the rules. Do your parents know you post this kind of stuff?
I'd like to apologize to everyone else for that. I feel it would be a mistake to talk to this idiot like I would a normal person, it will only make him think he is. -
Fab1bGuys knock it off and please review the rules before I lock the thread!! Fab1b
-
Bitterrunner-upBeing the life-long possessor of minority opinions, I'd like to say that it's nice to see a little variety in the views expressed on these sites. For you Buckeye faithful out there who get so upset at anyone who is not a die-hard Ohio State fan, may I ask why? Why do you care if someone else has a different opinion of the team you follow? And why can't you just discuss and debate on the merits of an argument rather than all ther personal stuff? Not loving tOSU isn't a crime. Other people actually follow other teams and don't love Ohio State and somehow the world keeps spinning. Also, why ask someone not to post on a thread because you don't agree with their views? I don't think the Ohio State wrestling program is so fragile that it will crumble under the criticism of a couple of posters online?
As far as the topic, I think Ohio State underachieved at Nationals this year. I think they will struggle next season will be a middle of the road team in the Big Ten, at best. I alo think the need to sign a couple (or more) big time recruits to stay relevant in the Big Ten and NCAAs. Iowa has out recruited Ohio State over the last three years, they have a ton of talent in that room. They're not going anywhere. (the REAL)OSU is young and excellent. Penn State has a sick amount of young talent ready to step on the mat next year (both Altons, David Taylor, Kemmerer, Ed Ruth, Quinten Wright). Cornell finished runner-up and brings in Peppleman and Vilalonga. Ohio State has its work cut out for them. -
Fab1bI do agree OSU will have its work cut out for them when you look at the likes of Iowa, Sandeson's recruiting at PSU, Oklahoma St appears to be on the up swing again, and with Iowa St, Minn, and Cornell it is going to be tough at the top!!!
-
USMCdevil05Yes they will have their work cut out for them. Penn State will be very tough in a few years.
Girevik,
As for Tom Ryan and Tom Brands bringing their recruits with them. That is just good coaching!
