BJJ?

  • SantaCarla
I was at the Arnold, and The Brazilian Ju Jitsu caught my eye.
Looks a lot like wrestling (Take downs, points) but you can do more such as holds, chokes, etc....
Any one had any experience with it? I was thinking about finding a gym.

I actually teach the takedown class at Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu academy in Westerville. I have my purple belt Under Robin Gieseler. It is a great academy. You can check the website out at Gracieohio.com
Great place to train. No egos, no wanna be UFC fighers. We do have some LEGIT fighters though. Great place to start if you want to check it out the best thing you could do is go to the website, and try to get in touch with Robin. The phone numbers are there for you...
    Good luck!

Having a wrestling background can definitely be a plus if you're going into BJJ. Having that built in knowledge of how to get from one position to another that you want can help a lot.

How do they score a takedown in BJJ? Just wondering. I watched some of it at the Arnold too.

Same process as Wrestling, just not as much fighting takedowns in BJJ. Little bit of difference when someone is pulling guard. Take the back = 4points, Side mount 2 points, etc... Sometimes the point system changes from Tournament to tournament.
    Having wrestling helps for sure!!!

So you could technically win a BJJ match by continually taking the guy down and then kicking him? I bet that's really frowned upon.

Yea. I also noticed a lot of guys like to jump up in the air, and try to get a tri-angle hold, or wrap legs around the other guys body.
    Looks fun!

There was a 6 month adjustment for me. It's odd to go to your back at first. Also got choked stupid on my shot attempts for awhile. It's great as you get older because the whole key is to stay relaxed and not waste energy.

Here's my old school in Lexington, south of Mansfield, www.teamchitwood.com

No if you let him up the takedown will not be scored if you get one again. However if the referee stops the match for lack of action and stands it up I think you can score again. Also if your opponent pulls guard you won't score the takedown.

Brazilian Jujitsu is different than MMA. You can double leg someone and score even if the guard is pulled, I think 1 point because you have advantage. However, if the bottom man sweeps, he scores 2. I never saw a BJJ match where the ref stood up the fighters. Most points are scored when passing the guard (3) or mounting (4) and a premium is placed on ground fighting, not takedowns.

Yes, there are points for Takedown,, but Premium points are based on sweeps, passes etc. There are also advantages. It is not very confusing once you get going for awhile.
