varsity letter ??
-
wrestledogI am getting ready for my wrestling banquet and determining my who will receive their varsity letter.
I wanted to see what other coaches use as their criteria for a letter.
Currently I use a point system. Since we have a point system as to matches and tournament worth 1, 2 & 3 points on your schedule and a limit of 20 points on the season, I felt that a good criteria would be to wrestle half of the scheduled points.
Example:
3 duals = 1 pt each TOTAL 3pts
(2) one day tournaments = 2 pts each TOTAL 4 pts
(1) 2 day tournament = 3 pts each TOTAL 3 pts
TOTAL 10 pts = Varsity Letter
What do you guys think? -

We did a % system. You take the entire schedule. Act as if the wrestler lost every match. Then you pick the % of matches wrestled to letter. I think ours was 35%/40% of minimum matches. It came out to like 16 matches or something I think.wrestledog wrote: I am getting ready for my wrestling banquet and determining my who will receive their varsity letter.

We always used 5 varsity wins (be they duals or at varsity tournaments) = a letter. Alternatively JVs could letter by placing top 3 at a varsity tournament (we sent our JV squad(s) to smaller team varsity tournaments).wrestledog wrote: I am getting ready for my wrestling banquet and determining my who will receive their varsity letter.

It worked well. -
USMCdevil05Ours is you either place at a varsity meet, wrestle 25% of the varsity schedule, or wrestle in the sectional tournament.
-
matdadOurs is that a wrestler must earn at least 30 varisty points in a season to earn a letter.
Examples:
10 decisions = 30 points
5 falls or forfeits = 30 points
any combination of matches that result in at least 30 points -
DuckmeWe have the wrestle half of the varsity points (10 out of 20) and you letter. dual-1 pt, 1 day tourny-2pts, 2 day tourny-3pts.

ksig489I dont like wins being a criteria. If a kid guts it out and works hard all year and only gets a small handfull of wins on a varsity schedule...he/she is still a varsity wrestler. Very few kids in a school building have what it takes to finish a wrestling season.
-
Con_AlmaI've often argued that we should reward those kids who get forfeits and thus earn team points. They came prepared to wrestle and made weight and helped the team in so doing. The opposing team was unable to put a wrestler up against them for whatever reason. Individually they've done everything they could to help the team.
Team points determine our Varsity Letter qualifications but they currently do not include forfeit points. -
Sweeping_SingleWe also use a point system. To earn a varsity letter, a kid needs to have wrestled at least 10 of the 20 points during the season.
-
GoldenBearEither I'm more old-school and crusty than I thought or the wrestling world is turning to marshmallow cream right before my eyes.
and here I've always felt that I was bowing to the "participation ribbon scociety" by having a point system whereby if a kid wrestled every varsity match and lost every varsity match...he would letter. That is the base-line, after which lettering points are awarded based on results that contribute to earning Varsity Team points (be it by Win, Major, Fall, Tourney Placement, etc...) in increasing amounts. -
lion69we award 10pts for a varsity match and 2pts for a reserve. Any team points they earn are added in such as 6 for a pin or forfiet. Any points earned varsity or reserve build towards the varsity total. 120 points earns a letter. Also anyone who represents the team in the sectionals or a wrestler who has been with the team for 4 years letters. So a kid who wrestles in our twelve scheduled matches but doesn't win letters but he can't miss. Also that kid that bounches from reserve to varsity still can earn a letter by winning at reserve.
-
cdvaI think the team points earned is the way to go. (3 for dec, 4 for major, ect)
If a kid ends up 1-15 hard to convince me he/she was a "varsity" wrestler.
Just a JV kid with no one in front of them.
Things in this sport should be earned. -

Coach can letter whoever he wants in addition to the criteria. I just remember that was what was on the packet of papers that we always got prior to the season detailing practice expectations and whatnot.ksig489 wrote: I dont like wins being a criteria. Having some sort of criteria based on wins gives an extra incentive for kids to work harder if they want that letter. -
RamirezPoint sytems are fine, just remember to word "coaches get final discretion", coaches know who deserves and who doesnt. Finishing season is a big one for me personally, disbarring injury.
-
hizzmutherI know of one coach who lettered everybody as long as they finished the season competing and practicing. Said he would continue to do it until someone told him he couldn't. Good for him. All of those kids worked hard.
And I know this year it was important for my wrestler to know at the beginning of the season what the criteria was for earning his letter. He needed to know before the season started. And his coach was able to tell him before the season started what he had to do to earn his letter. Kinda think that was important too. -
USMCdevil05i don't think you should just give a varsity letter to everyone. Part of making your team better comes from having kids strive over the summer and work harder and get better to get their letter and get in the line up. That's just my opinion.
