I Wear PantsThere is a 74 and 78lb weight class? Since when? When I was in Jr. High it was 80, 86, etc .

Basically they added the 78 class and last yr they added the 74 class.I Wear Pants wrote: There is a 74 and 78lb weight class? Since when? When I was in Jr. High it was 80, 86, etc .
Take the standard weights 80 86 92 then add the 2 lb xmas allowance plus the 2lb feb allowance and you have your weights 84 90 96. Then add the new 74 and 78 lb 6th grade classes(since most of those kids are all 6th and 7th graders) and you have your weights. -
NWDI like the added lower weights. These result in full brackets, excellent wrestling, and the opportunity for some guys to wrestle and place who would otherwise be unable to due to their small size.

Huh? Fuller brackets?NWD wrote: I like the added lower weights. These result in full brackets, excellent wrestling, and the opportunity for some guys to wrestle and place who would otherwise be unable to due to their small size.
Actually it has thinned out the 78 lb bracket by adding 74.
Didn't you see how every district(7 of 8) doesn't even have 8 kids in the 74 lb weight and half of the districts at 78 lb?
I think it's easier for a 6th grade 74 lber to make it to the jr high state than the grade school state. -

Cthelites: I'm not sure your logic is sound.Cthelites wrote:

Did I say "fuller" or "full"?
2009 - JH state championship 74lbs had 45 wrestlers qualify, and 78lb had 48 wrestlers qualify - looks pretty full to me.
Thinned out 78lb?
Is that to say that the 78lbers cut to 74 or that there were enough 74lbrs wrestling up to justify your comment? If they were wrestling up, then as I said the 74lb bracket gives them a chance to compete fairly with others their same size & weight. Either way, I don't see any thinning as both 74 & 78 had full brackets. -
green-d209 and 164 had just as few wrestlers, maybe they should eliminate that class too.
249 had more then the 78 pound class get rid of it also.
People who cares, it's more important to get the kids on the mat then to push them away.
I bet almost all of the districts will have 8 or more in every class come Sunday.
Have you looked at any of the district brackets for grade school, numbers are pretty low.
Getting to state via grade school is easier then Junior high, you must not have been to a junior high state qualifier. (not just because the competition is harder, but all districts on one weekend.) -
CthelitesFuller or more full? Oh well I hated English anyways lol!
The brackets at DISTRICT are thin for the light weights (as they are with the heavies). This thread is talking about Districts not State.
Most of the time you win two or even one match you make it to state.
Green D I've been to Districts a couple of times now and most of the weights are full 16 man brackets(sometime a couple more and sometimes less) where we go (except for the lights and heavies of course).
And I'll still stick with the 74 lb class is easier for a 6th grader to make state. Less than 8 man brackets and they take 6 to state. Win one your in!
I'm all for opportunities for kids to wrestle, but really if you take out 6th graders there is no FULL weight class for 74 and 78.
I think the 78 lb class is enough for the lighter weights.
Middle school weights start at 80.
They added the extra weight class for the money!
Good luck to all going Sunday! -
green-dBGSU had 11-74 pounders and 14-78 pounders last year.
How many grade school state classes had over 14 kids in them last year for districts?
