Delaware's Invite still on...has openings

ThePacerWayDelaware Hayes is still hosting their Rieman Invitational tomorrow (Saturday Feb. 6) and some teams have dropped out...so we have openings. We're looking to have 12 teams (each kid gets 5 matches). If you were in a tournament that got cancelled, can still travel, and are interested in filling one of the openings, call tournament director Tony Rieman at (614)448-7035.
Oh, and we got clearance for teams to call in their weights tonight.
Teams still in the tournament as of 5pm tonight:
Bloom Carroll
Big Walnut
Delaware Hayes
DeSales
Cincinnati Elder
Kenton Ridge
Massillon Perry
Marion Harding
Olentangy
Westerville North -

TCSoupVery good day of Wrestling. Congratulations to all the teams who showed up. 6 in all, 3 real good teams in Olentangy, Massilion Perry, and Cincinnati Elder and 3 that competed very well in Bloom Carrol, Desales and the host Delaware Hayes. Those that choose not to attend especially the 3 -4 local teams who cancelled out missed a very well run tournament with some great competition even with such a small field. Its funny that we drove from one school district and right thru another on our way there this morning that cancelled out and it only took us 20 minutes longer than if it had been held in mid May.
-
huntergreenUnfortunately it is not always up to the wrestling coaches when it comes to decisions like these or I am sure all teams would have been there.
-
cruiser_96I'll be honest huntergreen, I'm glad that sometimes that decision isn't left in my hands. I don't think that there is enough snow or ice that could drop that would make me want to miss...but then again, I'm not the one driving the banana in the conditions. My guess is, if I was, I might take a more level-headed approach! Just sayin'.
-
wingman87thWell said cruiser! I'd much rather error on the side of caution, than be that one misfortunate accident that caused an injury to one of our wrestlers. This time of the year, with two a days coming up this could be a well needed break. Physically and mentally some kids are getting very worn out at this time of the year.
-
lowsingle174I've been wrestling with these decisions my whole career. It is tough. Well said Hunter. I was hoping to see you this afternoon at Watkins, but whatever, I guess I will see you at the OU Golf outing!!
-
TCSoupI agree with your thinking. However in this case at least 2-3 of these teams were risking no more than what you ask of your wrestlers and their parents to do on a 2-3 times on a weekly basis during these winter months getting your kids to school by 5:30am or 6:00am for conditioning or weight lifting in as dangerous conditions as today. Actually black ice and fogged over windows ( Moms and Dads in a hurry ) are much worse dangerous conditions than going to a Tournament were you have been given the oppurtunitiy to weigh in your kids the night before and call in those weights . And within 20-30 minutes of a tournament which doesn't start until at least 9:00am where you can drive to after the Sun has come up and set.
Just Sayin here : Pretty whimpy excuses for those teams to cancel out.
And have no dog in the fight as far as being connected with said Tournament. -
hang_looseMaybe the athletic directors should consider a 1-2 hour delay just like the superintendents do for "iffy" weather conditions.
Mr. Rieman, Nice to offer call-in weights. Don't see that very often for weather delays in high school wrestling. I stopped by for a while today and you know how to run a smooth tournament.
Anyway good luck next year! -

FadedGlory88TC Soup is an outright idiot to make a statement that teams had whimpy excuses...what would they be afraid of???? If you have no dog in the fight then keep your piehole shut...what a tool.

snugglyhippoI would venture a guess and say that TC is not a meteorologist or a lawyer. If he were sufficiently trained to perform either of those vocations he would understand that:
1. We live in a society in which one wrong call from the person at the top (in this case superintendents) can result in children being injured and end up in that person being sued. In both of these cases, I would say better safe than sorry.
2. Who cares how far away, (10, 20, 40 minutes) each team is? The road and weather conditions can differ drastically based on specific area, terrain, county resources for snow removal, etc. If numerous trained professionals advise me the weather in our area is not safe for travel, I go with their opinion. Hindsight is always 20/20...but in the case of safety, I don't rely on hindsight.
It may have ruined your wrestling tournament a bit, but it is a small price to pay. -
lhs7870snugglyhippo is correct, this decision was not made based on a "wimpy" whim. A superintendent or a transportation director made the call. Overall the safety of the kids, coaches, and spectators are taken into consideration.
Congrats on having the tournament despite the conditions, sounds like you did a great job hosting it.
