Criteria for earning a varsity letter
-
upset_125The coaching staff I'm on has decided to change our current standards for earning a varsity letter. Talking about it, we really could not come up with a clear, fair, attainable way to earn their letter. What do other coaches out there use for their teams when it comes to earning a varsity letter?
-
cruiser_96I have thought about this recently. Below is what I'm envisioning...
1) Eligible all season
2) Zero school rules violations (CoC violation, vandalism, weapons, etc.)
2) Present at least 95% of practices (most teams practice 72-80 times a year)
3) Earn the team an average of 1 team point per event for the year. (If a full load is scheduled (20 points), the individual must earn 20 points.)
There may be a couple others I'm forgetting but these were at the forefront of my mind.
I'd love to see what others have for their criteria. -
ksig489[FONT=&]This is what we use at Licking Heights...we have tinkered with the total points needed...it is at 60 now but I think 80 is not too much to ask for either.

ksig489Right now we count JV events as long as they have wrestled in a varsity tournament at least once. If we keep the points at 60 that will change to Varsity only. If we go to 80, JV will still count as long as they wrestle in at least one varsity tournament.

monarchprideBasic rule must wrestle 50% of points (10 out of 20 available) at Varsity level, we have a couple varsity event on our JV schedule and they do count towards lettering. We make exceptions in both directions for but for the most part that is our rule.

lion69We use a point system that I have used for many years. All points earned count towards varsity or reserve letter. For competing in a varsity match you receive 10 pts for a reserve match 2 points. You receive any points earned 6 points pin or forfeit, 5 tech so on. If you have ten varsity meets 120 pts is needed for a varsity letter. If you have 8 reserve matches per year then 16 pts are needed. This allows for that kid who wrestles some varsity some reserve to earn his letter. You also must compete in 2 varsity matches to earn your letter no mater what the total. Wrestlers placing in sectional earn a letter and a wrestler who is injured and on track to earn his letter shall receive his or her letter. Seniors who have been in the program 4 years shall earn a letter. Finally points may be deducted for cutting practice or getting into trouble at school. I post the totals for the week each Tuesday and they really watch their points closely and make me aware if I make a mistake.

It is what it iscoaching several sports, I try to keep things simple (KISS)!
sectional placer or better = automatic
or
participate in 70% of varsity events
4th year senior
coach's discretion -
Dust_E_RoadsSimplest and most straight forward one I ever heard was a 20 point system.
Wrestlers get 1 point for a varsity match wrestled and +1 for a varsity win.
Clear simple system. Maybe has some draw backs. Does the 0-20 kid deserve a letter more than a kid who was part time JV and part time varsity but who was 7-5 in his varsity matches?
