City League Newcomers??

  • It is what it is
I was looking at the teams and their returning wrestlers, but wondered how many "newcomers" each team was getting.

Top teams with returning city placers were:

    WH - 10
    WR - 8
    W - 7
    EA - 5
    BR - 5
    M - 4
    C - 4
    MF - 3

I was surprised to see Eastmoor with 5 returning city placers! I know we (Mifflin) have a couple quality junior high kids and a new HYW that could be decent, so hopefully that helps put us in the mix for a top 3 finish......only time will tell!! : thumbup:

Eastmoor only had 5 that were not seniors. But let me alleviate any confusion, two of those are not wrestling this year and our numbers are LOW. Its getting harder for me to find eligible guys that are willing to put in time. I may have to do some in-season recruiting:RpS_bored:

mcglori I do in season recruiting up until the first of the year. I look at my blank weights then start looking for kids to fill those blank weights. One thing that hurts me is that some kids don't want to wear THE SINGLET. I understand the're young and they don't want to wear something that tight. Then I have a few good kids and other kids their weight say they can't beat my good kids so they don't come out. I explain to them that they still get to wrestle and train with a good kid which will make them better for next season. Then finally jv-b basketball kids say if I don't make the basketball them then I'll wrestle. I've watch too many kids spend two years on the b squad then jv their Jr year and do nothing their senior year. If we only had middle school wrestling.

It is what it is: I only have 4 returners training right now. Family issues are keeping one of my returns off the mat. Only time will tell so I wish everyone well and I'll see you guys on the mat. Or should I say I'll see you "Inside The City League Circle".

Sorry to hear that from both of you; our #'s are always a problem in the city!

Makes no sense why CCS doesn't sponsor M.S. wrestling and football.....oh wait, that'd require them truly caring about athletics and student-athletes! :RpS_lol:

Good luck this season starting with this weekend (we're at the Bad Apple Brawl in Mt. Vernon )! LOL!!

Track teams are starting to wear singlets to run. Tons of Olympic track runners wear them.
  • Westie101
I am all for leaving singlets behind, I just dont want guys to be wearing fight shorts. I would be okay with something like this

Kids don't mind sagging and showing their underwear, but cry about a singlet......gimme a break! :RpS_angry:

Saw West's lineup for this weekend and noticed Fluerval wasn't on it; is he not wrestling this year?

You speak the truth glorious one, the struggle is real.

    [/INDENT]

He is wrestling, he is cutting weight, should be good to go in January. He did not play football due to academics so we had to reprogram his diet.

We (West) could be very strong at 6 different weight classes. We have a new kid that transferred in that will wrestle at 220 that could do very well.

Is J-Ro making 106 this year Major Tom?

    Sable going 195? : thumbup:

Saw Rodriguez ranked #14 in state at 106! : thumbup:

I wouldn't say strong, but we (Mifflin) could be pretty good at 4-5 weight classes....emphasis on COULD!

I saw that too, but I think he weighed in at 111 at the all star meet. He is going to be good at 106 or 113, he put the work in this summer.

Had a good day of wrestling yesterday at Mt. Vernon! A lot of our young guys got good mat time that will pay dividends later in the season!!

Congrats to Delonte Myers for finishing 3rd (although his semi-final match had a few questionable calls by the ref!) wrestling up at 152!
Congrats to Calvin Haynes who placed 7th wrestling up at 195!
Congrats (??) to Jordan Jackson for a 5th place at 113 (not sure if that's accurate)!

Looking forward to see our progress this weekend at Clear Fork!! : thumbup:

80baby, you just need to set the example for them by wearing a singlet to practice...once they see you do it, they'll understand it's not such a big deal!

I hear you about jv-b basketball...there are about 35 kids in the gym for JV/jvb practice right now and they're all 106-152 pounders...I wish some of these coaches would be honest with the kids who aren't going to play in games (unless everyone else gets injured) to give us wrestling coaches a chance with those kids. Heck, I think I'll approach the JV coach today and ask him which of his kids are really wrestlers taking up space on the hardwood...

Funny but true story. Talked to a dad an area High School. He knew his son should wrestle...everyone knew his son should wrestle...except for his son. Had no basketball skill at all, but it was the "popular" sport in Middle School . At MS Basketball try outs the coach kept rolling the ball the length of the court down toward the wrestling room and saying, "Hey, ["Johnny"], go get the ball". After about the 4th or 5th time the kid asked him why he kept doing that. The coach took him aside and explained that he belonged in the wrestling room more than on the basketball court. Not that I endorse the methodology, but I thought it was good that the basketball coach in this case understood what was best for the kid and the teams (wrestling and basketball). The kid ending up being a decent wrestler.

    Dust_E_Roads,

The previous basketball coach that was at my school would have a talk with me right around cuts. No joke he would honestly have about 50 kids that were underclassmen going out for both the freshmen and JV team. He would try to send as many my way but every now again I'd get a good kid here and there.

90% of them aren't basketball players, but reality hasn't hit them yet! Plus, a lot (not all) of basketball coaches are selfish and are only concerned with "their" team and not the success of the school; they say they promote other sports, but they don't!!

the sight of 80baby in a singlet might scar the Briggs kids for life! LMAO :RpS_lol:
