Best D-1 central district 275-285 hwt....of ALL TIME

  • the comet plex
After seeing Kam the ''lesson'' teacher aka kam the bam go 49-0 on the year it got me thinking of the best hwt's we have had in the district. Over the years we have had some big tough guys and some smaller ''high motor'' guys like teacher as well. When I think of the best hwts. guys like Larry angles comes to mind he was the 94 champion from FRANKLIN HEIGHTS yes I said champion and franklin heights together he was 49-0 and was never taken down his senior year and was meaner then anyone inside the circle I have seen. Back when f. heights was ranked and had those 10-0 teams they had under tom faulk angles would steam roll every tourny from medina to waite, Not a single guy was faster and stronger at that size he wrestled like a 138 pounder........ My number 2 guy. Troy bowers the 99 champ from westerville south a guy who I watched at least 50 times and was the best guy ever for big slams and throws and he would scream as loud as he could when he would slam you. Brakeman had him ranked 9th his sr year and he had came back from a mid season hand break and just pinned every guy he faced. He was a guy who never even moved that much he would just stand still then out of nowhere he would explode and pick you up and slam you or throw you directly on your head and pin you. Number 3 my number 3 guy was never a state champ but he was a champion on fun matches ....he was a mean cocky, rude, and HUGE guy who would tell the other hwts how he was going to throw them and ''see fat fly'' as he called it why standing in the halls of the tournament's looking at all the brackets on the wall  Mike Matalka gahanna lincoln 96 he would win just about all his matches by slam and pin but when he would get to states he would get beat by the north east ohio hwt's I think he may have placed 7th a few times. Some of his slams vs guys not as good should of been illegal but boy was that cool to see 275lb guys flying like that. The 1996 m.ville sectional had a match in the 2nd round with mike matalka vs t-bone the heavyweight from grove city and you could of called that match assault with all those body slams and throws. I remember the gahanna coach screaming at matalka to stop playing around and pin the grove city wrestler. I cant tell you why im such a fan of the heavyweights I wrestled 171-189 but I would never miss the heavies because you knew you could see some big throws and slams. Any other guys like that anyone else can remember?

    Luke Fickell.

    End of thread.
  • Tony Mead
yep what he said! Back in my day, the heavys were big solid wrestling machines. Things have changed but in central ohio i have to say the 3timer gets the nod until that is beat everyone else is in the argument of 2nd best (o:

luke was before my time I never got to watch him. I forgot about his 3 championships. Was desales d-1?
  • cruiser_96
No. He was D-II. But I'm not having a discussion about heavyweights and not mentioning Luke Fickell. I don't care if it's heavyweights from Pennsylvania or Indiana, I'm listing Luke Fickell.

I think fickell was a 4 time finalist too wasn't he? Got 2nd at 189 I believe his freshman year in 89
  • cruiser_96
Freshman year he got beat and fell victim to the follow-your-man format.

Jeremy Tate, Licking Valley 96-97 I believe. He was a 2x champ and teched his guy in the championship of the senior nationals. He beat Angles at the all star meet the year they both won the title, but that's just a 3 min exhibition match.

Pat Garren and Travis Gusan were pretty good. Idk how they'd stack up with the guys you're talking about but they were studs.

what school? I think I might of watched that from the stands my freshmen year lol. I do remember a smaller hwt coming out of the blue and beating him at a occ tourny or occ duals. It was all done different back then. I did watch him get upset by a tiny bald hwt.

1998 was the last year for follow your man sectional through state, 1999 was the last year at sectionals only. Unless the central was the only to do it still because I remember my freshman year (1999) the #4 seed got upset in the first round and I beat the guy who beat him in the quarters to knock him out of the tourny.

I am with Cruiser on this one. Fickell end of topic! No disrespect to Bowers, but I could see some of these guys beating him.
