D2 Sectionals- Licking Valley

  • huntergreen26
I am bored and thought I might get some discussion going on the upcoming sectional tourneys. We are at Licking Valley on the 28th. They are solid from top to bottom and I think they could challenge the likes of Claymont, Carrollton, etc. for a district title. And, they are basically full of freshmen and sophomores.

A lot of other good kids in this sectional as well. Teams and a few individuals are listed below.

Big Walnut- not going to list my own kids!!!
Bishop Watterson- Kring (126), Haley (170)
Briggs- Green (220) and Poeschek sp??? (285)
    Buckeye Valley- Anthony (113), Mentzer (120), Kidwell (132 and 170), Garnett (145), Wycoff (195), Park (220), Cochran (285)
    Granville Mendecino (126), Price (152), Holt (120 and 170), Eckels (195)
    Heath- Young (138), McGhee (152), King (170),
    Independence-
    Johnstown- Walls (132), Bullard (138), Landis (120)
    Lakewood-
    Licking Valley- Fogle (106), Carpenter (113), Chesser (120), Elliott (132), Martinez (138), Lewis (152), Fout (160), Moran (170), Stansberry (195), Benner (220), Van Meter (285)
Marion Franklin- Woodall (152), Fort (1600
    South

I would say 138 and 152 look to be the deepest weight classes. Correct me where I am wrong!

Side note- this extra week before sectionals is killing me! By the time mid February rolls around, we should be getting into the thick of things!!!

I would be surprised if LV does not run away with this sectional....that said we have not crossed paths with Buckeye Valley this year

Bullard - JM, Landrum BW, Young H and Martinez LV will make that a strong weight class .

Martinez is certainly the big favorite to come out as the champion.

152 has some good kids....I will reserve my opinions as I have a dog in that fight but I think 170 could be the most interesting. There are several really good kids with no clear favorite at the top.

I too cant cant wait to get back to Watching wrestling all weekend!!!

    See you soon Hunter Green!

Tyler Poeschel from Briggs; side note, coach Hall wants Green to go 195, but not sure that's going to happen.
138 & 152 are deep, but I still think each has a clear favorite (Martinez - LV & Price - GV).

Lakewood has a pretty solid 113, name escapes me though.

Is it Huber? He does look like he has had some good results.
  • wrestlingjunkie
Ray Huber is a tough kid. Ray versus Addy Fogle would be fun. Both good tough kids.

I think Valley really had a chance to challenge those schools u mention but losing Readman at the beginning of the season n Lewis just recently to a knee injury is really going to hurt our chances.

You might see this match at the lcl tournament but not at sectionals as Fogel will be at 106

South HS has two kids that could make some noise, both seniors. Tyler Silverthorn will wrestle at 145 and was a DQ as a sophomore at worthington kilbourne. Melvin McGlown was a DQ at 195 his sophomore year but may be 220. Both guys did not compete in the post season last year.

Silverthorn not going 138 might be great strategy! : thumbup:

How many weights will have more than 6 kids? I don't see 106 113 having many kids here.

Last year, we had a DQ at 106......due to there only being 4 wrestlers......step on scale, DQ!

So what would be the case if a weight only has 3 or four kids and an alternate is needed? Would they pull from the other site?

    The answer is yes

No..I don't think that is true. Last year or the year before there was a sectional that only had 3 wrestlers in a weight class. The result was that there was a first round bye at the district tournament for one of the sectional champs.
  • huntergreen26
You never know until rosters come out, but looking at the things I have seen, I think 106 will have small numbers, but every other weight will at least 7 wrestlers.

When I was DI a few years back there was a kid that couldn't wrestle and the alternate from his sectional wasn't there so they took an alternate from another sectional to fill out the bracket. I do remember that one year at Darby when there was a bye in the bracket because there wasn't an alternate from any sectional there to put in the tournament. That just goes to shows how important alternates are at district and state level. You never know whats going to happen at weigh ins or during the week leading up to the tournament.

Four wrestlers at 106 and 195...five entrants at 182 and 220...Yikes!
