[INDENT]To update this situation Brookhaven High School seems to be closing and Independence High School is staying open.
This is going to change the dymnamic's of city league sports. Where do those students go? I hear the plan is to split them into Linden High School and Mifflin High School. But what about our open enrollment option? I am happy for our kids at I High but sad for those at the haven. Having bulit a relationship with some of them i feel for them not having the chance to walk the stage at Brookhaven High School with all that pride that is in that buliding. I hope this doesn't have a negative recoil but these type of decision has been made in other cities (Toledo, Springfield ) it seems to be working out just fine. If our school district would consolidate cutting the number of high schools from 20 (Fort hayes, CAHS, Downtown, international ) to say 12 keeping these four schools as a choice i believe the sky would be the limit in the classroom and in extracurricular's.

Never been a fan of open enrollment (eliminates neighborhood pride/unity, imo), but I would think students would be placed at their home schools unless the open enrollment option was available. If kids want to open enroll to a different high school, they should have to provide there own transportation ...that would save the district a lot of money....way too many buses running kids around all over town. Jmo -

Brookhaven will close. As will 1 middle and 2 elementary schools. -

It will be interesting to see if the Brookhaven head coach gets the Beechcroft football job , if so I'm sure his asst coaches and players will follow him...that could make the Cougars a D3 power.

The city needs to embrace its neighborhoods. I don't agree that a student needs to have a choice to attend a neighborhood school. If the school is so bad, parents can look into parochial schools or moving out of the neighborhoods. I understand that money is an issue most of the time, but if education is that important to a parent (which it should) that parent will do anything to improve the child's odds a to good education.
Of course, I hope the staff and students of Brookhaven have a chance to find a new school. It is a shame. There will be more schools on the chopping block in two years.
