raiderrooter31st Annual West Jefferson Invitational
They come from schools, near and far, and schools that are big and small.
The 31st Annual West Jefferson Invitational will feature 25 teams from around the state, and although most of the teams are from Division III (15 teams), there will also be many larger schools in attendance.
The host team, the West Jefferson Roughriders will be attempting to capture their third tournament win in the young season, and they have a formidable lineup.
Last year, the Roughriders sent 13 wrestlers to the Sectional tournament, and all 13 moved on to district competition. Five of the ‘Riders then advanced to the State Tournament.
135 pounder Marco Gualtieri and 152 Sean Prather are each two time State Qualifiers, and each placed 8th in the State last season.
Aaron Branham (119), Jake Cochran (171) and Tyler Fabry (285) also made it to the State Tournament last year.
Gualtieri and Prather each won their weight classes at Mt. Vernon, as did Tyler Reichle (125) and Nate Blackwell (145).
Add to this the fact that West Jefferson is the top ranked team in Division III, and 10 wrestlers are ranked in the top 3 in the area. All of the wrestlers mentioned above are ranked along with Gennar Feucht (103), Tyler Hughes (112),and Ryan Fultz (189).
Joe Householder (112), Dillon Harper (130), Justin Jacobs (140) and Luke Mickle (215) round out the West Jefferson lineup, and all sport impressive records.
"This is a strong tournament" commented West Jefferson coach, Mike Branham.
Evidence of that lies in the fact that there are at least 15 former State Qualifiers in the field, along with at least another 60 wrestlers that have been District Qualifiers.
West Jeff has won it's tournament for the last three years, and Branham is "hoping to get back in the win column", after a 2nd place finish to Pickerington North last week. Pickerington North is the top ranked Division I in the area.
The other teams in attendance will be: Columbus Briggs, Columbus Brookhaven, Circleville, Dublin Jerome, Franklin Heights, Granville, Grove City, Hamilton Township, Independence (Cleveland), Loudonville, Newark Catholic, Paint Valley, Trinity, Tuscarawas Valley, Tuslaw, Union Local, Columbus Walnut ridge, Waterloo, Waynesville, Columbus West, Westerville Central, Westfall, Worthington Christian, and Zane Trace.
Highlighting some of the top teams and individuals:
Nelsonville York has a young team that features 12 wrestlers that are either Freshman or Sophomores. There are three State Qualifiers on the team. Carl Moody (125) placed 8th in the 119 Class last year, 119 pounder Thomas McLaughlin finished 5th in the State and Zach Hook (135) also qualified.
Circleville has three District Qualifers, including Nick Greenlee, who was a State Qualifier in 2008, at 103 pounds.
Independence, as a Team, won the Hawken Invitational recently. Greg Daley finished 7th in the State in the 285 class, last year. Angelo Columbo won the 130 class at Hawkin this year, and Independence has four other District Qualifiers.
Loudonville is led by Scott Spring (119), a two time State Qualifier, who finished 6th in 2008. 215 pounder, Brett Allerding recently won the Mt. Vernon tourney, and has 2 wins against Fabry.
Bobby Mann (145), is a State Qualifier representing Tuslaw, which also had four other District Qualifiers last year.
Justin Fano, representing Waterloo, qualified at 112 for the State tournament in 2008.
Waynesville has Cody Steiner, who qualified for the State tournament at 103 pounds last year, and won the Franklin tournament a few weeks ago.
Zane Trace's Weston Davis, qualified in the 140 class last year. Six of Davis' teammates also qualified for the Districts a year ago.
Grove City is the 6th ranked Division I team in the local poll, and had five District Qualifiers a year ago.
Hamilton Township won it's own tourney this year, and has five District Qualifiers, including Heavyweight, Chris Settles, who won his weight class at Hamilton also.
The wrestling begins on Tuesday Dec.29th, and continues on the 30th. The wrestlers will split into four pools of five wrestlers, and the top two wrestlers from each pool will be placed in an eight man bracket for the march to the Championship. -

Rebel YellOK, I stand corrected. But, what type of schedule does WJEFF wrestle? I didnt see any WJEFF at the Graham preview. I dont even see where WJEFF is at the Best of the SWEST. Do they wrestle Covington, Versaills, Mechanicsburg. Are they at the Hammer and Anvil, etc...? Seriously, who does WJEFF wrestle this year? Help me understand!

Obviously you have an axe to grind with West Jefferson Rebel yell. They wrestle an extremely tough schedule as Westie illustrated. Why would Coach Branham fabricate results in this day an age when it is so easy to check? He wouldn't, and quite frankly he doesn't need to. West Jeff send multiple kids to the state tournament every year and usually places a couple. Get over it man.Rebel Yell wrote: OK, I stand corrected. But, what type of schedule does WJEFF wrestle? This wasn't written by someone from West Jeff. This exact article was published in the Madison Press on Saturday..and I wrote it. I'm from London, but like to pull for all of the schools..at least when they aren't facing London..Rebel Yell wrote: Five went to State? Are you sure that Marco and Sean placed 8th? As for the article itself..of course it was a WJ theme, since they are in Madison county and hosting the tournament. I did hours and hours of research and emailed as many as of the coaches as I had info for. Unfortunately, due to space limitations, the story was mostly about WJ, and I did get every SQ mentioned.. -
ztcoachraider...loved the article...you included schools from all over as you always do in your articles. wish you worked for the Chillicothe Gazette! Rebel as for you we went to Versailles a week or so ago and quite frankly WJ would pretty much dominate the 2 teams you listed...once again thanks for the great coverage raider...

raiderrooterZTCOACH,
Thanks for the compliments. I don't work for the paper. Just a few articles here and there. I don't ask to get paid, but I do like to see the "other" sports get coverage like football and basketball seem to. I had a son that wrestled, and a son that played soccer. Since I was going to be there anyway, I might as well take a few notes and write about it.
Thanks again and good luck the rest of the season. -
FIREBALL5152Does anyone have individual results from day 1?

hang_looseraiderrooter, Glad to hear from you. You do a great job on your articles!!! Wrestling needs more people like you.
