I'll assume you are talking about Laney (106).

We haven't really thought that far ahead yet. With the failed levy, more than just sports will be getting cut. He will be a junior next year, and anyone with a kid who has expressed his intent of going to college knows that this next year academically is the most critical.

A solid ACT and/or SAT score is crucial. Developing a disciplined life, resulting in a balance of study and wrestling are of utmost importance. Things like that cannot happen if AP and CP classes are done away with. The notion that college will be similar to high school is ludicrous. If he is not adept at carrying /balancing both loads, he isn't going to do well.

Shakur has the desire to compete in wrestling in college. As his coach - heck, as a fan of his - I refuse to see him enter that phase of his life unprepared. No matter the wrestling state of a school, if their academics will set him up to be a success as a husband, father, functioning member of society in 7 to 10 years, that's where I want him.

When we find the school that can provide thy for him, and he's admitted in, there he will be.

On a personal note, Shakur is a fantastic ondicidual from everything I've seen. If he'd be willing to wait 15 years, I would allow him to approach my daughter in conversation. Granted, he'd have to come to my house, and communicate via a hallway, but that would only last until she's allowed to date at age 35, but hey, Shakur would make that short list. (Here's hoping Little Kolodzik is reading. He's another one!)

I forgot what I was saying. I love Shakur and wish him the best.

cruiser -- I'm hoping your levy passes the 2nd time around and that Shakur wrestles for the Cruisers and brings home a state championship to the 'Port. THAT would be a great ending.

On the complete opposite side of the ledger would be seeing Shakur in a white & blue paw print singlet over at Dom's House of Transfers. That would bring me to tears.

Dusty, I had a chance to talk to shakur(who is a GREAT kid) about schools he would think about IF the levy does not pass. Davidson was not on the list.

I don't think GM is going to go back to the ballots. This is the new normal... Until certain members of the community rally enough support to win their schools back.

I'm stepping away from the district though. I walked out of my alma mater around 2:15pm today for the last time in my foreseeable future.

I wish all the best to the Cruisers. 10 years of great, and sometimes trying, times. Time to create new memories elsewhere.

Something good will come out of this. Our family went thru the exact situation 4 yrs ago. Tell the young men to seek other schools. Open enrollment is a wonderful option. Be humble when you walk into your new situation. The current stress will make the wrestlers stronger individuals. Tell them to leave and don't look back. They will meet new friends and keep their present ones. Look at it like going to college early.

Well folks, over the last 6 to 8 weeks, about one thousand four hundred and fifty five things have occured.

#1) our open mats are still OFF. But...

#2) GMHS wrestling has been dubbed a "non-funded varsity sport". Now, you may THINK that's the definition of a Club sport, but alas, it is not. From what I recall in conversations, the OHSAA is not concerned with how schools pay their coaches - or, as in GMHS' case - how much they do not pay their coaches; it's main concern is eligibility standards for the students in terms of location and grades.

#3) GMHS wrestlers will not notice a difference as far as their wrestling lives go. The only difference overall will be that the program must pay for transportation and entry into tournaments. And, unfortunately, my brother will be working for free.

#4) Because of #3, I have moved on. Most coaches will tell you about how they go in debt throughout the season. That's true for me, and not getting paid after the season is a bit tough to justify to my senses, wallet, and the Mrs..

#5) Next year, my hope is to apply for and earn the head coaching position at Lakeview Junior High, where I will attempt to fill the (large) shoes of Coach Dresch. Time to bust out the fancy clothes!!!

#6) And perhaps the best part of all if this is... Most of what has gone on over the last four or five years can still go on. Things like The Cruiser Invitational, The John S. Rarey Classic (JV Tournament), another tournament - freshmen or JV; can't remember. Also, the annual Be Better Camp. And of course, Inside The Circle!!!

If and when the Lakeview position becomes mine, I'll be sure to announce it. If not, I'll still be around.

Also, look for fliers for the Be Better Camp! Those will be out sometime in mid-September.
