Con_AlmaIt's the wrestler of the year award not a career accomplishment award. Prior year stats are meaningless. Only current year should be considered.

if no. 2 qualified for state and no. 1 didn't, then no. 2 for sure. i agree that prior year stuff should be meaningless with respect to this particular award, especially no. 1's beating of a SQ (if that SQ was earned last year). lol whatever!!Con_Alma;1403716 wrote:It's the wrestler of the year award not a career accomplishment award. Head_KnightI don't mean to disrespect anyone by posting this, but I feel like my kid deserved the Wrestler of the Year award for the MOAC... The wrestler from Mt. Gilead had a great season and did beat a returning SQ in the finals of our league. However, Tyler Beck won the league 3 times, had a 36-1 record at that time, his only loss was to a DII State Champ and had two pins and a tech in the league tournament... Not to mention placing first in every tournament this season except the one loss to Lehner from Lex in the finals of the JC GORMAN... I do feel that our league should wait for the entire season to end before we vote... If that were the case, I'm sure a State Champ would have won the award over a district qualifier... The boy from MG did get hurt in the district and did default out, but still, a STATE CHAMP isn't even the Wrestler of the Year in his own league?????
-
Con_AlmaYeah, that's tough to swallow but I think most league awards are voted on and announced at the end of the league tournament. It's kind of hard to include post season activities when that's the case. Usually coaches are considering the league duals and league tournament at that point.

hasbeenAre they different weight classes? Maybe they considered Wrestler 1's weight class to be tougher than your sons.
-
Head_KnightI guess I was thinking the award was called "Wrestler of the Year"... Maybe we should change it to "Wrestler who had a good weekend"... It's not my son... I'm the coach...

ptrsnwe had this same probalem in our league a few years ago. the obvious best kid in the leaguie did not get OW at our league tournament. to solve this problem, we now have a wrestler of the year award that is awarded at the post-season coaches meeting. what tends to happen for the OW at the league tournament is that a kid who wins the most exciting match or pulls a big upset usually gets voted for that and you forget about the returning state placer that just TFed a SQ in the league finals because you just saw a #5 seed pin a #1 seed for the title. one drawback to our wrestler of the year award is that coaches don't get to vote on it, it automatically goes to the wrestler who places highest at state.

EllisonIs more than wrestling factored in? (E.g. grades, sportmanship, "citizenship," etc.?)

Which weight class was tougher? i.e. which one had more quality wrestlers in it?Head_Knight;1403839 wrote:I guess I was thinking the award was called "Wrestler of the Year"... Maybe we should change it to "Wrestler who had a good weekend"... It's not my son... I'm the coach... -
Blast82.5(I'm not a coach, so take it for what it's worth.) For whatever reason I never placed much emphasis on "league" honors. When I wrestled, I think I was named 2nd-team in my league, and in the District finals I pinned the guy who was named 1st-team. No one was under any misconception of who the better wrestler was.
I don't even know which division of the OCC our team is in. Couldn't care less. The sectional matters ... the district matters ... the state matters. Your guy is a State Champ ... now what is that other guy's award worth? -
Head_KnightNo, the coaches just vote at the end of the tournament... I have NO CLUE what they take into consideration, but Ialways vote for the wrestler who has the best resume... Wins, losses, league accomplishments, past sectional, district, state results... Tyler was 36-1 and was the only returning State Placer in our league... He has a 3.7 GPA... 3X academic All-Ohio and now State Champ... Comical that he wasn't voted Wrestler of the Year...

Yes, you are. Low rent.Head_Knight;1403801 wrote:My Bad... I guess I'm way off here for even bringing it up... -
Head_KnightMaybe I am over reacting here, but it would have been nice to have seen him be recognized by our league/coaches... He is a STATE CHAMP and that's really all that matters...
-
EllisonSo there were probably several wrestlers nominated... not just between these two? That would really change the dynamic in how the votes might fall out in an unexpected way...

What have you done for me lately? Both have solid stats, but unless #2 actually beat #1 in the league (which didn't happen) I would say it is a wide open race! I will admit that I would have a hard ignoring the past accomplishments.Head_Knight;1403667 wrote:Which one should be Wrestler of the year???
