D3 Ranked vs unranked??

Okay, this is not a slam to Boro fan at all, I highly repect his time and dedication that he as well as others put into compiling these rankings. I also, am making an assumption that his rankings were more based on how the teams would fair at the individual state tourney. With all of that said, this is interesting to take a look at...

    BORO's TOP 10 DIII Teams.
    1. Troy Christian – 102 Points - Region 24 - Lost to Versailles in the Regional Quarter Finals Region 24 Champion - Versailles
    2. Waynedale – 97 Points Region 20 (Lost to Tuslaw in the Finals) Region 20 Champion - Tuslaw
    3. Delta – 69 Points - Region 17 Winner
    4. Dayton Christian – 57 Points - Region 23, lost to Blanchester in Regional Semi-finals - Region 23 Champion - Blanchester
    5. Mechanicsburg – 55 Points - Region 24 Lost to Covington in regional Quarter Finals - Region 24 Champion - Versailles
    6. Beachwood – 47 Points - Region 19, Region 19 Champion Keystone
    7. Greeneview – 46 Points - Region 23 - Lost to Blanchester in the Regional Quarter Finals (Region 19 Champion - Blanchester)
    8. Rootstown – 45 Points - Region 20 (Lost to TUSLAW in the Regional Semi Finals) Region 20 Champion - TUSLAW
    9. Carlisle – 43 Points - Region 22 Lost to Deer Park in the Regional Quarter finals (Region 23 Chanpion Blanchester)
    10. Shadyside – 36 Points - Region 21 Lost to Amanda Clearcreek in the Regional Finals (Region 21 Champion Amanda Clearcreek)

    Heading to St John Arena:
    #1 Delta - Region 17 Champion (Boro Ranked 3rd)
#8 Keystone - Region 19 Champ (Boro Ranked Beachwood 6th)
#5 Upper Sandusky - Region 18 Champion(No Boro Ranked Team)
#4 Versailles - Region 24 Champion (Mechanicsburg Ranked 5th in Boro)
#6 Johnstown Northridge - Region 22 Champion (No Boro Ranked Team)
    #3 Amanda-Clearcreek - Region 21 Champion (Boro Ranked Shadyside 10th)
    #2 Massillon Tuslaw - Region 20 Champion (Boro ranked Waynedale 2nd & Rootstown 8th)
    #7 Blanchester - Region 23 Champion (Boro Ranked Dayton Christian 4th & Greenview 7th)

Let me make one more comment about the rankings, if several of the teams that were in the same region were scattered more through out the state, and not having a few in the same Region....I'm certain more of Boro's top 10 teams would have made it to St John Arena...Like I said, this was not a slam on BORO at all, just interesting concept & insight.

Tournament teams are very different than dual meet teams.

If he indeed was projecting the individual tournament team standings then your comment regarding teams being scattered throughout the State would have made difference is very pointed, for tournament teams would continue to have their best wrestlers continue to score points just as a dual team would continue to score if they didn't face a juggernaut in their region.

I wonder what will be more important to coaches in the future? Focusing on that one or 2 "great" wrestler(s) you have and do all you can to help them win an individual title or trying to build your program by becoming a great dual team thus possibly getting more kids in your school involved?

It will be interesting since most kids that win a state title has done so, based on the preparation and hard work duing the off-season (Camps, Open tourneys ETC.) many things done outside of their own school program and without the coaches assistance, atleast officially due to OHSAA regualtions and how much a coach can spend with the kids during the offseason.

Very interesting topic - Like you said, Boro's rankings are based more on the individual tournament and how team points are expected to shake down there.

First off, I'm happy to see Central Ohio is well represented in Div 3! Good Luck to Amanda and Northridge!

Second, you bring up a very good point about coaches building good dual teams. I think the new dual tournament system gives coaches an excellent marketing tool to sell more kids on wrestling. Whether you have talent on your team to get your school's name into the Schott at the end of February or not, I think the new dual tournament adds excitement to our sport. We now have a team playoff system - and the smart coaches will use this to lure new kids into wrestling, or at least retain kids that may want to leave the team.

Most kids know making it to the Schott in February is tough - only the top 16 in their weight class will, but if you have a chance to contribute to your team's playoff run (so to speak), a kid that may think about leaving the sport may stay, and those kids that are hesitant to come out because they didn't start back in kindergarten and they think it's too late to start , may come out.

Look at successful football teams. If you have a program that consistently make playoff runs year in and out, they have a sideline full of kids dressed for the game-regardless of their school size. Many kids come out and play even if they don't stand a chance of starting. Just wearing the jersey, and maybe getting onto special teams is enough for them. Not saying wrestling will be as popular as football, just saying the team tournament will bring more kids out and keep kids wrestling that ordinarily would drop out.

The duals is making it interesting for sure...When I first posted this, I didn't realize they were even going to keep team scores what so ever at the individual tournment, so that was my thinking concerning the rankings...Now that I was informed that team scores will still take place, I understand Boro still doing the team rankings the way he did.
