He would have taken top 3 in jr high state last yr if he wrestled.
    woulda, coulda, shoulda
    junior high ain't high school
at the time these rankings came out, he had yet to wrestle a high school match, but his own coach ranked him about blacka, a district qualifier, and all but one other 112 pound wrestler. (not saying the kid shouldn't eventually be ranked, just that he should have to actually wrestle in high school before he is)

the coaches association should be embarrassed by hammons obvious bias and give the responsibility to another coach
Wow I was just pointing out someone that I knew of firsthand from Ole. Freshman or not the kid's a stud. Should Bo Jordan or Dan Heil not be ranked this yr because they only wrestled Jr High last yr? Same goes for Fellipe Martinez last yr. Lord Brakeman utilizes the jr high state tourney,
I totally agree that jr high isn't high school, but sometimes studs are studs no matter where they come from. I'm not sure how the rankings go.
And BTW I think McHugh beats Blacka but that's just my opinion since you brought him into the conversation. And I think the other freshman Wilson can beat him also.

When "has he beaten Pressley recently"? They have not wrestled this year......last year, I believe they may have split 2 matches when Maynard was at Teays Valley. No doubt, Maynard should do very well in the D2 heavyweight scene....

This summer at an All Star meet I believe in New Albany - He and Settles both.

Hey cruiser_96, how about some Div. 1 individual rankings?? We all know how knowledgable u are in the sport of wrestling and respect your rankings...:) How do u see the teams rankings this week after the Panther Duals?
  • cruiser_96
Sitting at Grapevine Pizza, just across the street from P. North High School, I sat looking at my last week's rankings and realized a couple of things...

The first Pickerington North is an amazing solid team, from top to bottom, in both dual meet and tournament strength. The second, I messed up on the first rankings, even rushed a bit after the Marysville duals, and violated my own principles in doing so.

To me, rankings are about a few things...

#1) Exposure. But not hap-hazard exposure in order to build something that is truly not there.
--- A. Exposure for the student-athletes. These guys work just as hard (if not harder) than the football players and basketball players... Let's get them some publicity. ESPECIALLY when the local newspaper is offering space to do so!!!

RANT: EVERY Saturday moring in October I can open Section C in the Dispatch and find a result for almost EVERY SINGLE football game in the ENTIRE state of Ohio. Just about the same for basketball. ...I CAN'T EVEN GET FULL RESULTS FOR A TOURNAMENT IN COLUMBUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTFront!?!?!

--- B. Exposure for coaches. Which coach doesn't want to know where they stack up as a team and individually? Not to mention, if I'm the #5 team and the #4 or #6 team is coming to my gym for a dual, guess what... I'm spreading the word! I want some fan-base for my student-athletes in the form of parents, friends, teachers and other members of the community. (But that could just be me.)

---C. Exposure for family and friends. From first-hand experience, I know that this works. Last year, our 215 pounder, Seth Nelson received some publicity. I had people talking to me about that that I didn't know who I was! My guess is that in certain areas around our city, there are true communities in which the store owners and clerks know a group of kids and talk to them about what they see in the Dispatch.

---D. Exposure for the sport (and something to post on the walls of a wrestling room). I hesitate to mention this one out of respect for Russ Hellickson and his poem, "I am Wrestling: Do Not Weep For Me". As if the sport can't attract more student-athletes without my help! But, as I stated parenthetically above, it gives coaches and families a hard-copy of something to hang on the wall or put in a scrapbook.

    B. Tracking. I think this could also be listed as motivation. If the rankings are anywhere near legit, I would hope that the kids would use it for a positive and reach great heights because of it. Knowing that I'm travelling to the #2 kids home gym should (or could) serve as some level of motivation in order to have a high level of focus for that week's practice.

Along with these reasons for rankings, I did fail in the area of consistency. I will type this again and again... Consistency is ranking. Are the Saints a better team than the Cowboys? In my mind, yes. Were they last night? Perhaps not? Injuries aside, they lost. BUT - to consider the Cowboys better than the Saints, is short-sided at this point.

How does all this equate to Central Ohio wrestling??? Results and the lack thereof. I had last year's results, and one dual meet tournament worth of results. That is not enough to do a fair assessment of our area. In hindsight, I would have stuck to my guns concerning the preview, and listed teams to watch.

A lot of rambling here, but to end this, I will say that I will not make the same mistake twice. Not to mention the team rankings are a bit easier than individuals.
  • cruiser_96
One last thing... I base my rankings on dual strength. I think the District tournament has a tendency to shift those team one way or another due to the individual format as opposed to dual meet format.

you are missing the point. it is not that a freshman should not be ranked "this year".
THE POINT IS A WRESTLER SHOULD NOT BE RANKED IN MIDSEASON RANKINGS UNTIL HE HAS WRESTLED IN A MATCH.
the brakeman rankings come out in the middle of the season for a reason - because kids have wrestled by then. preseason rankings are another deal all together.

it is kind of like people saing labron james would make a great wide receiver. maybe he would, but he shouldn't be on any all-pro ballots until he actually straps on some pads and earns it on the field.

by the way, the kid mentioned above has since wrestled and now deserves to be ranked by any standard.

all i was saying was rankings are not based on reputation for studliness. they are based on how you are wrestling at that time. wrestle bad, the ranking should go down. wrestle well and it shoudl go up. be consistant and that factors in.
but if you don't wrestle, you shouldn't get ranked. (sorry labron)
a lot of kids quit this sport, they shouldn't be listed over kids who keep wrestling. injuries happen in this sport that can end seasons. coaches and fans can't know why someone isn't wrestling, but we do know who is and who isn't wrestling. only those who are should be ranked.

    wise thoughts cruiser!

Anthony McHugh from Olentangy (112) finished 4th at North Canton this weekend, so he is now a "known" commodity and very, very good.
  • Varsityfan32
Wilson and Gutierez From DS are good freshman with McHugh and Temchenko from Olentangy

Add the McDougle bros from Gahanna to that group and you had a stacked DeSales Jr Stallion team last yr.
    Temchenko is at OO.

I guess that freshman didn't care that he was just a little freshman in a big pond eh?
    Great job Anthony!
    Any results?

Timchenko (Orange) was 3-2 at North Canton with a few big wins. His loss in the conso quarters and McHugh's loss in the finals were to the same kid by the same margin. The McDougals and Lee Wilson Jr. certainly do make up a good group of freshmen lightweights.

They all should be sending Christmas cards to Coaches Wilson & Cormier for the excellent coaching they had during their Junior High years.

Yeah where are some of the other animals on that Jr Satillions team like Tate, Hensel, Smith,Gusan Attend School now ?
