Dual meets during school hours/end of day...
-
wraith51Has anyone on here ever done this before? Either have it during school like an assembly with the student body pile in the gym and the opposing students come too and wrestle a dual, or have the dual start at the end of the school day where students are still there but the only class time being interrupted is the wrestlers leaving to warm-up and weigh in. If any body on here ever done it before, been a part as an athlete or coach and has some insight as to the logistics of how it can be ran either comment here, inbox me, or email me at [email protected]. I'm looking into the possibility of doing this in the near future to build some excitement and our student body is small enough it can fit in the gym, but I would like some input from people who've done it so I can present the idea to my AD. Thank you for any and all help.

queencitybuckeyeIf you're looking at requiring the student body to attend, it's a singularly bad idea IMO.

wraith51Well that's why I am trying to get the ideas, b/c there are pros and cons to all of it. Requireing the kids to be there will cause chaos in the bleachers or a great amount will skip. If you allow certain ones to sign-up/buy tickets you still run into the skipping problem. I want to try and have bases covered before this is presented. I have a feeling our admin may have an all or nothing mentality of either all students required to show up or we won't be allowed to do it. Or like a reward system where kids with good grades and/or attendance can go everyone else stays in class or a study-hall. Again trying to see if it's possible.

I agree, I wasn't trying to suggest killing the idea altogether, sorry if it came off that way.wraith51;1148928 wrote:Well that's why I am trying to get the ideas, b/c there are pros and cons to all of it. -
wraith51No, it didn't come off that way, sorry if I came off defensive haha, you basically said what I was thinking when I was presenting the idea. I think I was giving our student body a little more credit than they deserve.

Gardens35Did it several times in consecutive years. Timing is everything
The first year we started too late in the day, got through 5 or 6 weight classes, the last bell rang and the gym emptied out pretty quick.
Back it up about an hour and a half after that. Good Times! -

Awesome, did you have any issues w/ the opposing schools admin? Was is all students? Did they have to buy tickets? Did the opposing student body show up as well? I appreciate the help.Gardens35;1149102 wrote:Did it several times in consecutive years. Timing is everything

Gardens35No ticket sales, all freebies.
Small representation from the "visitors", one bus as I recall. I do not know how they determined who could make the trip.
Ours was students choice.....wrestling match or regular class schedule. Hassle free when the principal's son is on the wrestling team . -
OUdidntknowHow about a pep rally, staff vs. student Dual..lol..

mellaDid this years ago between Licking Heights MS and Watkins MS. We took a bus to Watkins and wrestled a dual as an assembly. It was pretty cool. I think they only had a center light on the mat and all other lights were out or very low.

CitybuckWe did this back in the 90's in the Columbus City League when I coached wrestling...It was huge and turned out great, everyone got in free and the place was packed. The student body was really into the match, half the students didn't know what was going on but they were into the dual just because they got out of class and it was the last period of the day.
If I was coaching wrestling I would give this a try at least once a year if you can, it will only help promote wrestling within the school...jmo -

See, I like that w/ the spotlight, but I don't think our gym is set up for that.mella;1149497 wrote:Did this years ago between Licking Heights MS and Watkins MS. HuskerdocYes, LH used to do this with Watkins. Was exciting. Kids got into it. Got very loud. Now a days, I think it would be tough for the administration to allow this with all the issues with education priority and funding...
Good luck if it works though -

Promotion is one of the big reasons I'd want to do it. wrestling has only been a varsity sport for 10 years at the school and up until this past season would only get 3-6 wrestlers, where this past year we had a decent dual team and quite possibly even more this year since I return almost everyone. This past year we won a dual at home by a 73-0 shut out and that got a lot of excitement in the school (which is what's helping my #s now) so I figure if i can get a decent opponent that's close enough geographically we might get enough excitement that kids will love being there.Citybuck;1149669 wrote:We did this back in the 90's in the Columbus City League when I coached wrestling...It was huge and turned out great, everyone got in free and the place was packed. Thank you, I'm hoping to meet with my AD before the end of school to plant the seed in his head that even if it doesn't happen this year we might be able to accomplish it the season after.Huskerdoc;1150487 wrote:Yes, LH used to do this with Watkins. Alternative.....Turn Off all lighting in the gym (including the stands) except for those directly above the mat. Not as good as the spotlight, but a similar feel. -

Not bad, I may have to try that.Gardens35;1150517 wrote:Alternative.....Turn Off all lighting in the gym (including the stands) except for those directly above the mat. Not as good as the spotlight, but a similar feel.
