Dual state tournament next year

  • pinem07
Can someone explain how this works? I know its much different from last year but not really clear about how it works this year.

There are sample brackets on the state coaches assoc website. Looks like duals on tues and wed nights, occ sticking with duals on thursday nights, the tourneys on fri/sat or just saturday. Say good bye to practices except on mondays and a couple fridays!

    Here is how it works...

    St. Eds still wins D1
    Graham still wins D2
D3 will be won by the all star team of the year.

This is one of the most pointless changes made that I have ever seen.

Jan. 23rd will be the first night of the process.

    I'm considering boycotting.

I like the concept and am excited for it, but I don't like the more weigh ins/more time away from my family. Regardless, it should be fun from a fan standpoint...I know our student body will travel if a TEAM does well in post-season run, regardless of the sport. I think it will help the sport, but it creates more stress from a training/coaching angle.

I think it's great! More matchs and mat time. Yes you'll have to train longer when you have the opportunity but it's a new challenge! And as Coaches we should embrase those challenges with our competative natures. I say bring it on! I seriously can't believe some of you are complaining about more wrestling!!! WOW!!!

    Shame Shame Cruiser! lol

It wasn't broken, it didn't need fixing. Like the new weight classes and the banishment of the figure four and the alpha weigh-in system before it, this in the next change that helps nothing. The State Duals covered this, and did so over one weekend. What do you want to bet that the team that wins this would have been the same team that won State Duals. The only sliver lining would be if it ends up leading to a single Division individual State Tourney at the end of the year (since the team title has already been decided). Of course that won't happen, becuase it is real change that actually needs fixing.

The addition of the 215 weight class and switching to double elimination throughout the State Tourney process were the last positive changes made by Ohio High School Wrestling.

    .....
We can only hope this would be the next step.

I like the idea, but i do know of a couple good coaches who are stepping down due to now having to be away from home an additional 2 nights a week.

We got it now and have to live with it.

Perhaps it is also another "State" weight management option.....If you are having to make weight for 2 duals a week in addition to your scheduled weekend. That doesnt leave much time to lose weight OR practice. I can see some early morning/late night practices. With this setup you could be competing 3-4 days a week and practicing 2-3...I dont like it! Need to DRILL!

Bitter was right it wasn't broken. Don't agree with him on the 3 divisions go back to the way it was before the 90's. From a fans point of view one division would be nice.

So is it single elimination ? I guess all High schools are eligible to compete ? Will it be Tuesday & Wed for sure
  • cruiser_96
Single elim., a team has a minimum of 8 wrestlers, Wednesday start.

Horrible idea. Sitting in on a coaches meeting for a league tournament and NOT ONE SINGLE COACH WAS HAPPY! This league has 2 possibly three teams who traditionally do well in Columbus. I as a fan am not happy with this as well. Now I know that D1 and D2 are locks every year but D3 is never a lock unless CVCA comes back down, but I think that the REAL tournament will lose some luster because of this. Still a big achievement for the kids, but it will be very weird to not watch the big boards and team score excitement.

I know it’s a small school division and most of you guys won't care but this is the same thing that happened at the WCAL tournament this year. They tried to change something that has worked so well. The best atmosphere for a small tournament I've ever seen or been a part of and their "AWESOME" round robin format really ruined a great thing that needed one simple tweak. (The state tournaments do not need any tweaking) It is a clearly a money thing...

CVCA is over 240 boys, they wont be dropping anytime soon...they are growing

They are still scoring teams at the individual state tournament as well.

Did this change? Originally I thought it was stated it would not be scored so that way Ohio had "TRUE TEAM CHAMPIONS" I believe was the quote I heard.

How would they handle it if one team won the Dual Meet Titles and another won the Individual Tourney? Would they have a split State title? What a mess.

bitter: the way I understand it, the OHSAA will recognize the team champs; the OHSWCA will recognize the individual tournament's team champ. Much like boxing... WBO, WCBO, and whatever other federations were handing out belts back then.

I think it's a good thing. There will be adjustments. We now have a very busy schedule at the end of the year and i'm scheduling more events before Christmas.
The important thing is that everyone gets to compete instead of the calculated top 2 from your district based on last years underclassmen who qualify. Even if we only win a couple of duals and move on to week 2, it's a big team bonding event.

Remember this, the first Wednesday, 66% of the state is eliminated (4 of the 6 teams at the Regional QF are eliminated)
the second Wednesday, 75% of teams remaining get knocked off, that's 91.66% of the state eliminated after only 2 events. So it's not like everyone in Ohio is adding 4 more events.

O my... I hope that a belt is actually awarded. That would be kind of cool...

    Regarding the state individual tournament:
I spoke to an officer with the state coaches assoc...the OHSAA will run the individual state tournament as it is now, with no changes. Originally the coaches assoc. was going to recognize team champs at that event, but the OHSAA stated if they were running it, they would do the awards as well still. Same awards, same format, same big boards...nothing changes

    Stupid....Stupid....Stupid....

This brilliant idea had to of been born from traditional 10th place district teams wining about not getting to qualify/wrestle at the State Duals. The currrent format has worked just fine.

It wasn't broke....I hope people boycott it or opt out. All these new changes taking place that most people are against....hurting more than helping.

Now Teams are going to have to move their League tournaments...and who wants to be wrestling top tier kids in a dual that you may end up seeing at Sectional, District and or State? CRAZY!

Mid season State Duals is awesome....late season....crazy! Won't have an impact on D-I or D-II...but D-III could change the final season ending outcomes.

Put this in the same boat with alpha, weight class redistribution and sail them off to the end of the Earth.
