I have never competed in the NCAA tournament. I’m not sure if I have told you, but
I was a 3 time champion of the Affton Quadrangular Tournament. It is the toughest
tournament in the world. The Tablisi tournament is second and I think the JV
division of the Affton Quadrangular tournament is third.
(In case you didn’t know Joe, there are four teams in the Affton Quadrangular.
“Angular” is a Greek word that means “four”.)
Even though I never wrestled in the NCAA tournament, I respect the participants
in that tournament. Two years ago when I attended, there were a lot of people
in the stands - several more people than I ever saw at the Affton Quadrangular.
I don’t know why that is. I think maybe the competition is so elite at the Affton
Quadrangular that fans think it will cost thousands of dollars to attend. From what I
remember, it costs $5 for an all-day pass. If you leave in between sessions, you need
to get your hand stamped and if you are a wrestling cheerleader or manager, you get
in for free.
I don’t what NCAA stands for and I don’t like it. I would never call the Affton
Quadrangular the “AQ” because it would be disrespectful to the toughest
tournament in the world. Just like I would never call Dan Gable, “DG” or refer to the
movie “Vision Quest” as “VQ”.
I like the fact that the NCAA tournament uses only one mat for the finals. The Affton
Quadrangular did the same thing. They shut down all the other mats they used for
the preliminary rounds and went to one for the finals.
Okay Joe, I hope that this letter is what you wanted. I would like to write more
but I have only done 3000 sit outs this week and that is not even close to what a
champion should do. I had a new neighbor move in above me. He is 75 and does
not speak English. I have been trying to get him to help me with my switch-reswitch
drills but he keeps closing the door. I am guessing he might be from one of the
countries where they focus more on Greco. (The switch-reswitch drill does not help
you a lot in Greco, Joe.)
I will see if he wants to pummel tomorrow.
See you in St. Louis Joe. Red Alert.
Your friend,
Wesley “Wes” Wesley
